Can we be honest enough to admit that we as 21st century Americans know in our heads that we should be the most grateful people ever but may actually be the least grateful? It is one of the great ironies of our current existence—we who have so many...

Living a life of faith in God means choosing purpose over popularity. The follower of Christ is called to a righteous standard, much higher than worldly standards. Because of this, many times the believer is challenged with making a decision that goes against the grain of societal norms. If faith is seen through the choices we make, then our life must reflect our faith. This oftentimes leads to a life filled with unpopular (by worldly standard) but purposeful (by Kingdom standard) decisions.

Life is the sum of our choices (Ephesians 5:8-17). This is why we are called to look carefully at how we walk and live, making the best use of our time. The key is not simply to make fewer choices – and avoid the fatigue and pitfalls of our daily decisions – but to make the best choices and to pursue first what is most important: the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). In God’s kingdom, Jesus is and should be the cornerstone of our lives, and choosing to chase after Him as a priority is what is best (Matthew 21:42).

The gospel is power for “then” and “now.” We see very clearly in scripture that God is at work powerfully in those who believe. The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes—not only when we see Jesus face to face in heaven, but now, here on earth. When Jesus left earth the Holy Spirit was sent to us so that we could receive the power and authority of God to be sharers of the gospel (John 16:7, Acts 1:8). We were created to have power, authority and dominion over evil now and experience God’s presence in heaven for all eternity, then.

Although the majority of us live in the Bible Belt, and it seems like the majority of people around us are “Christian,” we often find ourselves ashamed of Jesus. Perhaps we are not ashamed of Jesus Himself and what His life means for our lives, but we are ashamed of the association of following Him. Jesus is calling us to unashamedly follow Him, even when it means that others will see us. It is because of Jesus that we live. If we unashamedly follow Him, others will also come to know that life and hope in Jesus.

The gospel is not fake news, but the ultimate GOOD NEWS that we must not be ashamed of. We have become accustomed to seeing fake news or news that has been slanted to sway us one way or another everyday. The early church also struggled with spreading fake news, which is why Paul empowered the church to not be ashamed of the gospel, “for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16) and share this Good News with the world.
