Words matter. In a world where we can say or type whatever we want, we often forget or do not even know that our words have the power of life and death. (Prov. 18:21) The average man uses about 7,000 words every day. The average woman about 20,000 words a day. Regardless if you are higher or lower than the average, the truth is that we use a lot of words in the day—a great amount of opportunities to speak life or death.

Jesus has called us to compassionately love and serve our neighbor through the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The immediate access we have to generally everyone’s lives through social media, has led us to become a people who struggle with "compassion fatigue." Constantly being aware of what people need and tragedies of this world has influenced us to believe that making people aware of what’s happening on social media and how we feel about it, instead of being moved to action, is true compassion. Jesus charges us to act on our compassion and “go and do likewise” loving all people, just as God intended for His children.

We draw near to God by ceasing to be double-minded (James 4:8). Being double-minded is when our secret world does not match our public world, when what we believe and do in one setting is different from what we believe and do in another setting. In our modern culture, this is most readily seen in the areas of pornography and sexuality, which are easily accessed through technology. What God has designed for good within a covenant marriage between a man and a woman has been twisted and distorted into an idol. As a multi-billion-dollar industry, pornography and its various forms rob us of the abundant life God has for us (John 10:10). We overcome double mindedness and sexual sin by not minimizing the issue, by drawing good boundaries, and by finding someone to fight with you.

In a world full of connectivity, technology, and busyness we easily become distracted by the “many” and we forget about the “one.” (Luke 10:38-42). Our worlds are distracted with busyness because we believe that busy is the same as important and valuable. Whether it is our connectivity through social media, technology, jobs, success, friends or social status, etc., we have lost our ability to quiet ourselves, focus, and position ourselves to encounter Jesus.

God wants us to find our identity—our worth and purpose—only in Jesus (Philippians 4:11-13). In a world of connectivity where we see the highlight reels of everyone’s lives it is easy to compare our every day scenes to everyone’s highlights. Because technology has connected us to everyone, everywhere, all the time, we live in a place of discontentment with our current status, and even jealousy as we compare ourselves to others. We will defeat our problems of jealousy and comparison as we seek to understand and apply biblical truth.
