Henry Manetta is getting his band “The Trip” back together to perform for the first time since the significant impacts of COVID.

Matt Thomson won the National Jazz Award last year and this year he gets to enjoy being a featured artist at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues.

Eugene Ball is Co-Artistic Director of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues for 2022 and is excited that the festival returns to a face to face event across the parks and venues of Wangaratta, across the weekend of October 28-30.

Eugene spoke about the program of artists performing in the festival for 2022 that he and Scott Solimo have curated; including international artists collaborating with local musicians, and Australian artists performing across a range of Jazz styles and Blues.

Wangaratta will be buzzing to the sounds of Jazz and Blues in venues including the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre Memorial Hall and Alpine MDF Theatre, the beautiful Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the Merriwa Park outdoor stage.

Aussie Jazz Royalty Vince Jones spoke with David Moyle on Bent Notes about his musical career, gardening, creativity and how clouds can be used as an analogy for creativity.

Along the way Vince spoke about his affinity for nature and doing everything he can to reduce his footprint by being a food forester and creating his own bio-diesel to run his vehicle – to name just two activities.

The Importance of practice to maintain and improve ones skillset was also on the agenda for discussion as was the Trumpet, Flugelhorn and Flumpet!

Vince Jones will be performing at the River of Art festival in Bateman’s Bay on September 23, and in Melbourne for the first time in three years with two shows at The Jazzlab on September 16 and 17.

Stephen Magnusson was joint winner of the National Jazz Awards for Guitar in 2000.  In 2022 Stephen is one of the three Judges in this years National Jazz Awards – the 4th time that Guitar has been the featured instrument.

Stephen spoke about being gifted a Ukulele when he was only 3 years of age, an instrument that he viewed at the time as his ‘guitar’, and then receiving a guitar when he was 6 – and the thrill of immediately being able to make the same guitar sounds as he heard on the radio!

Stephen discussed the draw of the awards as a great opportunity to play with an awesome band while performing at the top or your craft – with the potential to win a great prize.

The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, incorporating the National Jazz Awards, is back live face to face this year over the weekend of October 28-30, 2022 in Wangaratta in North East Victoria.  Details of the requirements to enter the awards are contained on the festival website with entries due no later than August 31, 2022.

Brothers Mal and Steve Sedergreen visited the Bent Notes studio to chat about working together over many years in their band Mistaken Identity, and their album released in 2002 – WONDERING – the music of Stevie Wonder reimagined through the arrangements of Mal, and the performance of the band.

Steve and Mal are dusting off the charts to bring them back to life with their sextet live at the Hawthorn Arts Centre on Friday July 29 with guest vocalist Nina Ferro, drummer Andrew Swann, Bass player Harry Morrison and Trombone player Dave Palmer.

In this podcast hear Mal and Steve talk about their music selections, getting into the music, the preparation for a show –  and then what happens up on stage when the skills of the musicians working together encourages  a freedom of innovation, exploration and improvisation, to create a wonderful experience for both the band and the audience.
