Guitarist Tim Nikolsky visited the Bent Notes studio to chat about playing jazz on the forecourt of the Rod Laver Arena at the Australian Open in the early 2000’s, and realising while doing so that this was an ideal starting point to collect Australian Jazz and eventually put it together into what would become the Australian Jazz Real Book.
Hear why Graeme Bell thought the Real Book was such an important collection for Australia, and how an offhand comment to Jex Saarelart about improvisations of The Necks catalysed a transcription and condensation of their music for inclusion into the book.
Tim Nikolsky was guest of Bent Notes on Sunday June 19, 2022
