10 Life Lessons From 10 Years In Business (In 10 Minutes)
1. Everyone has something they are naturally good at, love to work at, and love to learn about. Find a way for people to pay you to do THAT. Plus, if you don’t love what you do, you will NEVER truly be great at it.
2. If you really want to be great at something, you must join and pay your dues to the 10 Year Club: Ten years, one thing, and a “get one percent better than yesterday” commitment.
3. The ONLY way to be successful in business is to aim and strive to be best-in-class through a 100% commitment to excellence and service in everything you do. How you do anything is how you do everything.
4. Figure out who the Mount Rushmore is of your field and study them religiously and relentlessly. Very very few people will do this, and if you do, it will give you an almost unfair competitive advantage. It is also the fastest and ONLY shortcut to success.
5. If you don’t 100% commit to learning how to market and sell, you should go work for someone else who does (thank you Dr. Alan Weiss).
6. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who also challenge you to be better and tell you when you’re being an idiot (thank you Kelly, Mike, and Katie).
7. Be your own best friend and positive coach. If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will.
8. Remind yourself of all the things you are doing well, and also ask yourself “What is the one Most important thing I could be doing better?”. The first is about confidence. The second is about humility. Both are necessary to achieve the highest levels of success. Plus, no one wants to be around a delusional jerk who thinks they are perfect and know everything.
9. Keep a relentless solution focus (thank you Dr. Jason Selk). Don’t whine and complain when things go wrong. It does nothing to improve anything. Plus no one wants to hear it…they’ve got problems of their own. Relentlessly focus on solutions and everything will be OK.
10. Give back to those who are less fortunate than you (thank you Mom and Dad). You didn’t get to where you are without help from others. So be kind and useful.
