  • Episode 136: The BSA's of "Nine Lives" (2005)
This is a bit of an unsung gem from the early 2000's featuring a bevy of BSA's and queens, including Glenn Close, Sissy Spacek, LisaGay Hamilton, Elpidia Carrillo, Robin Wright, Jason Isaacs, Joe Mategna and Mary Kay Place. And for fans of long takes, it's a fascinating anthology of 10-12 minute short stories each done in a single shot. Some stories are more compelling than others, and on first watch it can take a minute to catch up with the plots, but it's worth a watch and then a rewatch for all of the the lady acting and the intricate writing and direction of Rodrigo Garcia.

  • Episode 135: The He-SA's of "Big Fish" (2003)
While Tim Burton's "Big Fish" has no shortage of actresses in supporting roles, it's very much a men's story. But with Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup and DANNY DEVITO in the cast, it's a refreshing change of pace for us. And we still get an underused Jessica Lange doing what she can with the Wife role, Helena Bonham Carter both dragged up and down to earth, and Marion Cotillard in her American film debut shining, glowing and almost stealing the show. We discuss some strong feelings about early 2000's cinema, plus "Fight Club," "Living Out Loud," Jean Smart playing Fruit Ninja in "Mare of Easttown," a potential episode on "August: Osage County" and the Broadway musical version of this movie.

  • Episode 137: "Liza with a Z" (1972)
Our mini JuLiza continues this week with a special episode dedicated to Liza Minelli's 1972 televised concert "Liza with a Z," which does feature some Best Supporting Dancers, but is truly all about 26 year old Minelli going to a 27 and back in under an hour. Nick is a longtime, "owns the special edition DVD" fan while Colin is an "I heard a parody of that song on Drag Race" newbie, but we can both appreciate the DRAMA of "It Was a Good Time," the storytelling and enthusiastic belling of "Ring Them Bells," the brief but endearing chats with the audience, the moments she looks like her mother, and the way she wrings the absolute rag out in that ten minute "Cabaret" medley at the end. Just terrific.

  • Episode 136: The BSA's of "Stepping Out" (1991)
We're literally shuffling off to Buffalo this week to discuss this under-appreciated feel-good gem featuring the unbelievably charming Liza Minelli wringing out the rag as queen Mavis Turner. And she's accompanied by so many names we love like Andrea Martin, Jane Krakowski, Bill Irwin, Ellen Green and Shelley Winters! To say nothing of a show-stealing performance from Sheila McCarthy (cue a necessary tangent to 1996's "House Arrest" in which she is also featured in an ensemble of greats!), BAFTA BSA nominee Julie Walters, original Broadway cast member Carol Woods, and the incredibly familiar looking Robyn Stevan. Plus: Nora Dunn in a track suit! We swooned, we cried, we'll probably both buy this movie and put it on in the background while we're cooking.

  • Episode 135 : Jenna Maroney and the Moms of "30 Rock"
We know you're beeeesy but we implore you to listen to this week's episode because we are finally talking about Jenna Maroney and the Moms of 30 Rock! We long for the golden age of the Thursday night NBC lineup where 30 Rock was one third of 'The Office' and 'Parks and Recreation' Holy Trinity. We then queen on out two episodes where we are simply overwhelmed at the lady power of guest spots that includes Jan Hooks, Patti Lupone, and Elaine Stritch. We take a moment to acknolwedge the fay Jack Donaghy, Julianne Moore's unfortunate arc as one of Jack's old flames, and Jan Hooks' iconic delivery of, "I've got the meat, Jack." These two episodes have both of us singing "Do it to me one more time." • Episode 134: The BSA's of "Into the Woods" (Original Broadway Cast)
It's a musical theatre kid classic, the 1991 PBS American Playhouse recording of the original 1987 Broadway cast of "Into the Woods"! Featuring TONY winner Joanna Gleason as the Baker's Wife, Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Kim Crosby as Cinderella, and little Chip Zien as the Baker, this Sondheim staple is a fairy tale of nuanced, quirky and surprising performances, and we're counting down our Top 5 this week! Plus: Nick's own experience playing the Baker, our dream casting for the role of the Giant, thoughts on the movie version and that Meryl singing voice, a threat of "Mamma Mia" and a surprise Snooki.

  • Episode 133: The BS-Gays of "Fire Island" (2022)
This week we're queening out on the new queer rom-com, "Fire Island"! It's Pride & Prejudice at the Pines, and while we greatly miss a Best Supporting Charlotte, we have much to say about this story's take on the Bennetts, led by writer and full-name-only Joel Kim Booster. Plus: familiar faces and voices Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora as our resident Mr. Darcy, Nick Adams as the perfectly plucked Cooper, and Margaret Cho doing her Brenda Blethyn best as the mom of the pack.

  • Episode 132: Julia Louis-Dreyfus - "Seinfeld"
Whether she's barreling down the Van Wyck or breaking down in Boca Raton, Elaine Benes is gold, Jerry! This week we're queening out on Julia Louis-Dreyfus in two iconic episodes of "Seinfeld": Season 2's "The Busboy" and Season 3's "The Pen." We get a sea of veteran character actors, a slew of East Coast humor, the surprisingly good looking Cosmo Kramer, George Costanza the Everyman, and a very familiar energy from Jerry Seinfeld. But Elaine being hot in bed, hopped up on muscle relaxers, furiously packing and brown sweater dancing? On a show about nothing, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is EVERYTHING.

  • Episode 131: "Parallel BSA's"
We're wrapping up a month of Pedro Almodóvar with his most recent movie, 2021's "Parallel Mothers." Penélope Cruz's Oscar nomination is much deserved in this story of two mothers whose lives intertwine in beautiful, tragic and sometimes confusing ways after the concurrent birth of their daughters. Familiar faces Rossy de Palma and Julieta Serrano are back, Israel Elejade gives us Spanish Marc Maron, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón gives us best supporting monologues, and you won't believe where the signature red shows up in this one. We also discuss parallels to All About My Mother, some scandalous shower curtains, that hotel smell, and how we'd rank the four Almodóvar movies covered this month.

  • Episode 130: "All About My BSA's"
Pedro Almodóvar's 1999 Oscar winning "All About My Mother" is, like so many of his movies, all about so many things. and all about women. Cecilia Roth goes to a 27 and back as mother in mourning Manuela, Antonia San Juan and Marisa Paredes shine as Best Supporting Agrado and the indomitable Huma Rojo, and Penelope Cruz is back as the perpetually saintly and pregnant Sister Rosa. "All About Eve" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" are weaved into a story of replacements, returns, redemptions and, of course, that signature red.
