Best Supporting Podcast

After the production that was last week's episode, we're taking it easy with a casual fall catch-up this week. We discuss the Jamie Lee Curtis multiverse, Colin’s career path, Nick’s new addition to the family, The Watcher, an Office rewatch, Patti Lupone’s autobiography, Sally Field’s memoir, the Tár experience, the schlocky horror classic “The Fan”, reasons to watch “Hocus Pocus 2” and The First Wives Club on Oprah!

Awards season has officially begun, at least on this podcast, as we celebrate another year of great performances with The Westons! We're looking back on the last 12 months of episodes to recognize the best supporting sisters, friends, moms and other scene-stealers we've loved. Plus: we induct a new batch of Queens, look back fondly on the Housewives, give out the prestigious Rita Moreno Award for Excellence and of course, we name our BSA of the Year!

We’re taking a week off on the main feed to prepare for a very special episode next week! Instead here is this week’s discussion of “Smash” from Patreon, featuring friend of the pod Amanda Kuchinski (We Love to Hate Everything, We Love to Hate TV, Total Requests Podcast)! This week we chart the dramatic highs in the Houston household and the cringeworthy Times Square set lows of “Hell on Earth”! Karen books an orange juice commercial, Ivy goes full Method as Marilyn, John is a circa 2012 Republican, Frank finally gets his Beatrice Straight in “Network” moment (and even a bit of a song!), Derek hangs out in Ivy’s efficiency apartment, Tom and Sam get a little Sam and Diane, and Ellis will do just about anything for this show, except answer phones.

This week on Smash Derek decides to "take the show in a new direction," Eileen's daughter shows up, and Ellis weasels his way into Eileen's inner circle, (and the back of her car). Julia shouts at a judge for no reason, we are treated to the worst bowling musical number of all time, and Tom and Derek fight like cats and gayer cats. What's not to love? Brevity is the soul of wit, and Emma Thompson is the heart and soul of 2001's "Wit," co-written and directed by Mike Nichols. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play by one and done wonder Margaret Edson, "Wit" takes us through the grueling cancer treatment of Thompson's Vivian Bearing, a largely lonely experience except for the presence of Best Supporting Susie. played by living legend Audra McDonald. We have much to say about McDonald's history making career and what she brings to this role (the Popsicle scene!), and we have buckets of love for Eileen Atkins, as well as Noah Wyle even though he's actually not in this movie and Edie Falco as Nurse Jackie, which is sort of related. Plus: the presence of Pinter, the click-clack of Kelekian, the MUSIC!, and an important tangent about formative outfits from our cataloging years. Plus: Lucy updates and a supersized Beatrice Straight!

Is it hot in here? This week on Smash The Workshop is in full swing, Karen records a demo for Bobby Raskin, and Leigh Conroy has entered the chat! Tom continues to impress us with his one liners, Julia almost ralphs into her scarf, and we say BYE BYE to the lecherous Michael Swift. The episode concludes a bounty of touching moments as Leigh Conroy finally tells Ivy that is a star in the making and a rare tear-jerker acting moment from LEO! This week we’re checking in with the all star ensemble cast of 2000’s rehab dramedy “28 Days.” Don’t be fooled by the terrible poster, Sandra Bullock is at her best as reluctant in recovery Gwen, with Best Supporting Elizabeth Perkins as her conflicted older sister, not nearly enough Diane Ladd or Marianne Jean-Baptiste, a refreshingly real side of Steve Buscemi, the dreamy Viggo Mortensen, and Margo Martindale making her usual magic in a featured ensemble role. We also make time for an “Alice” tangent, some “Gravity” love, future episode planning (Ladd alert!), multiple “Erin Brockovich” asides, movies to microdose to, some spicy and controversial condiments, and a best supporting addition to the family!

This week on Smash Ivy trips on Prednisone, Julia and Michael have a secret topless rendezvous at the rehearsal studio, and Eileen sets a new high score at Big Buck Hunter! (And that's just the TIP of the iceberg! Karen and some "clowns" rock out at a bar mitzvah, John continues to be a catch, and Derek proves to be an olympic level asshole. The 2022 Emmy winners were a mixed bag of pleasant surprises and category stalwarts, including another big sweep for The White Lotus. Meanwhile the ceremony itself was nothing short of a series of choices. There was that venue, the KIA commercial, the irrepressible presence of Ted Lasso (and Michael Keaton!), Jimmy Kimmel sinking to a new low, the DANCING, and of course, the ultimate crime: the abbreviation of our lavender laced queen. But we got Bowen Yang’s golf claps, the rise of Zendaya, a Kel cameo, a reason to recognize Mare Winningham, and Best Supporting Sheryl Lee Ralph having a much deserved moment.

This week on Smash Eileen loses her assistant, Karen gives Ivy a Marilyn lesson, and Leo gets arrested for smoking POT in Central Park! This is only the tip of iceberg as we follow the continuation of John and Tom's clunky date life, Derek torturing Ivy in rehearsal, and a secret goodnight kiss courtesy of Michael Swift and Julia!
