  • Episode 158: Dolly de Leon - "Triangle of Sadness" (2022)
We are a parallelogram of mixed emotions this week! "Triangle of Sadness" is not for everyone, and certainly not for weak stomachs. But if you like bickering models, a surreal upstairs/downstairs scenario on a superyacht full of the filthy rich, Woody Harrelson as a drunken Marxist captain, an absolute orgy of seasickness, a little Lord of the Flies in the third act and a final twist literally right out of an 80's sitcom, then welcome aboard!

We're kicking off 2023 by looking back at 2022! This week we're counting down our best supporting actresses, shows, television events, home upgrades, pets and podcasts from the past year. Spoiler alert: Diane Keaton is on the list.

  • Episode 156: The BSA's of "A Little Princess" (1995)
We’re continuing to revisit our childhood BSA’s this week with 1995’s prestigious melodrama for 11 year old girls and gay men over 30, “A Little Princess”! Liesel Matthews gives a queen level performance as the Dickensian Sarah, squaring off against Eleanor Bron’s merciless Miss Minchin at her boarding school circa World War I. We also get Amelia Minchin giving big Kathy Najimy energy, Sarah’s best supporting friendship with Becky, Ermengarde’s perils with math, that cinnamon roll, THAT PIE, and an emotional climax that had us all screaming “SARAHHHH!!”

  • Episode 155: The "It Takes Two" Episode
It was only a matter of time before we dedicated an episode to “It Takes Two,” the 1995 Olsen twins’ take on “The Parent Trap.” This was no Oscar contender but honestly, get ready to get swept UP. it has the late and sometimes great Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg in his daddy prime, plus Queen Philip Bosco, Jane Sibbett and her dancing hands, wildly inconsistent accents, Canada as New York, Best Supporting Carmen, at least 5 genuinely good line readings from MK & A, and some iconic music that sends us on a real beefy tangent.

  • Episode 154: The BSA's of "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989)
A lot of attention goes to Chevy Chase and the yuletide foibles of Clark Griswold in this 1989 holiday classic, but our favorite part of "Christmas Vacation" is of course Diane Ladd in those glasses as Clark's doting mother Nora. And we have to recognize Best Supporting Beverly D'Angelo as the occasionally absurd Ellen, Queen Mae Questel as Aunt Bethany, and honestly, Randy Quaid's pitch perfect embodiment of Cousin Eddie. We also swoon for Todd and Margo's house, Mavis Staples' title song, John Randolph's big dad energy, the mere presence of Juliette Lewis and the layers of nostalgia that come with this slightly filthy and surprisingly heartwarming movie.

  • Episode 153: The BSA's of "Erin Brockovich" (2000)
They're called BSA's, Ed. While 2000's "Erin Brockovich" is best known as Julia Roberts' Oscar at long last, it also features a deservedly nominated Albert Finney as her unlikely sidekick/boss, Ed Masry, and Marg Helgenberger doing a lot of the movie's emotional lifting as featured Hinkley resident and bundt cake maker Donna Jensen. Plus Erin's kids are just great, even the baby! We have a lot to say about a fantasy barbecue with Aaron Eckhardt, similarities to Susannah Grant's other 2000 script "28 Days," the appearance of Broadway ladies Cherry Jones and Veanne Cox, some strong disagreements on old lady candy, our irrational resistance to both "Almost Famous" and "Pollock," potential casting if this movie were made in the 70's, and why this may have been a deserved win for Roberts after all.

  • Episode 152: The BSA's of "Hysterical Blindness" (2002)
This HBO movie is a hidden gem from 2002, despite earning a pair of best supporting Emmy's for film legends Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, a nomination for Juliette Lewis, and one very deserved Golden Globe for star Uma Thurman. Beautifully directed by Mira Nair (of "Monsoon Wedding"!), "Hysterical Blindness" is a heartbreaking slice of Debby Miller's life in 1980's New Jersey and her unfortunate fascination with Justin Chambers' Swayze-eyed Rick. She takes more than her fair share of comfort from her loyal to a fault best friend Beth and her mother Virginia, who may be finding love of her own with sweet old Nick Piccolo. Take a drink every time we say "Amber Autumn"--maybe if you're lucky, it'll be poured by hottie bartender Bobby...

  • Episode 151: The BSA's of "Suspiria" (2018)
We’re continuing our love affair with Dakota Johnson and our appreciation of witches this week with 2018’s “Suspiria”! We get Tilda Swinton doing triple duty with not nearly enough recognition, Mia Goth as Best Supporting Sarah, a coven of distinguished European actresses including Angela Winkler’s magical 11th hour micromoment, the DANCING, the themes and metaphors we definitely don’t fully grasp, and of course, Frau Sesame. Oh, and DAKOTA JOHNSON.

  • Episode 150: Dakota Johnson - "Cha Cha Real Smooth" (2022)
Much to our surprise, Cooper Raiff's "Cha Cha Real Smooth" came out at the beginning of this summer, not sometime last year, and has just been shimmying under the radar as the funny, feel-good coming of age story of an up and coming motivational dancer for the local Bar Mitzvah circuit. There is surprisingly zero cringe and plenty of actressing from Leslie Mann as his nameless mother, Odeya Rush as his hometown hookup and, of course, the Mother of Tears herself Dakota Johnson, who can do no wrong, ask anyone, ask your producer. Plus, some necessary swooning over the multi-talented Raiff and love for Brad Garrett as Stepdad Greg and "Looking" alum Raul Castillo as the surprisingly gentle Joseph. We wrap things up with a Best Supporting Broadway star and the discovery of some very obscure starlets.

  • Episode 149: Anjelica Huston - "The Witches" (1990)
The original 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Witches” is the stuff of childhood trauma, but for us adult actressexuals, it’s 90 minutes of queen, icon and star Anjelica Huston at her grand dame greatest, plus nuanced Jim Henson puppets, Mr. Bean, Brenda losing her Blethyns, Mai Zetterling’s truly great grandma, and bowls of delicious cress soup, preferably with bread. We discuss the scariest witch in the movie, our feelings on the remake, the perils of pairing fruit and chocolate, and our qualms with the ending (despite the wacky final line and the mere presence of Jane Horrocks in a Mercedes coupe!).
