If you haven't heard of the Cast & Blast Florida podcast before today, you'll be familiar with it by the end of this episode. Recently, we hosted Travis Thompson at our family ranch and I moved from the host chair to the guest seat for a conversation about the motivations behind Cowhunters Unlimited, Between The Beaches Podcast, the importance of ranching in Florida, and the commonality both sportsmen and ranchers share in working on conservation efforts in our great state.

Some of us are lucky enough to have our granddaddy here with us while others of us simply have their memories to cherish and the lessons to live by that they instilled in us while we were growing up. As patriarchs of the family, Granddads play an especially influential role in agrarian households, and in this episode I reflect on the man who showed me by example how to live a life of stewardship to God, family, his community, as well as land and livestock - my granddaddy John Olan (J.O.) Pearce, Jr. Tune in to hear quite a few of my childhood memories of not only Granddaddy, but also Okeechobee's early history and some of the other key agricultural leaders in this community.

The United States acquired the Florida Territory from Spain in 1821, and with that event settlers began pouring over the border. However, most of them didn't venture very far. The Florida Armed Occupation Act of 1842 provided settlers willing to move further south down the peninsula 160 acres in exchange for their armed defense and cultivation of the area. The AOA was instrumental in helping Florida achieve statehood just three years later in 1845. In today's episode, we examine a group of pioneers who applied for land under the act and moved into the present day Ft. Pierce area where they found early success followed by betrayal and bloodshed on the banks of the Indian River.

Mr. Jess Page, co-administrator/moderator for The Florida Cow Hunters Facebook group, sits down with us to reflect on some of early Florida's lawmen and outlaws, his own family included; his years spent working cattle across south-central Florida, his work with the Christian Cowboy and Faith Riders ministries, as well as his love for the heritage of Florida's ranchlands. Mr. Jess paints some vivid pictures of the hardscrabble life etched out by his kin and others like them in the pinewoods and across the wet prairies of Florida's unforgiving landscape during its formative years so don't miss this episode!
