  • Ep. #376: October 12-19, 1993 with Al Getz

Kris & David are joined this week by Al Getz (@AlGetzWrestling) to discuss the week-plus that was October 12-19, 1993. We also discuss Al's new book, Charting the Territories: The 1971-1973 LeRoy McGuirk Oklahoma/Louisiana Wrestling Almanac.

    • We start the show by talking about the WWF and Randy Savage going scorched earth on Hulk Hogan on Jim Ross’s Radio WWF show, including who was in the right, the timing of the rant, and whether Vince McMahon pushed Savage to do it. We also talk about a interesting episode of Raw featuring The Savage-Crush Summit and thus Crush's heel turn, which made no sense whatsoever when we analyzed it. We also talk about Shawn Michaels & Jim Ross making some very interesting comments regarding their WWF careers on the same episode of Radio WWF and a lot more in a packed WWF section.
    • Then we go International, talking about AJPW & NJPW running some very interesting shows including Jushin Thunder Liger getting a pin on Masahiro Chono at Korakuen Hall in a tag league match, FMW & W*ING doing well, Pancrase getting off the ground, Eddie Guerrero continuing his rudo turn in AAA, CMLL & UWA business looking bleak, and a lot more.
    • Next we come back to the United States, talking about the early days of Paul Heyman-booked ECW and their relationship with the WWN, Bob Caudle meeting Darryl Van Horn for the first time in SMW, The Moondogs turning heel and Brian Christopher turning babyface in USWA, Big D results of course, and other wild indie notes.
    • Then we close with WCW in a small but fun little section as we look at some CRYSTAL CHANDELIER shows, and their horrible house show business including killing The Omni, among other notables.

Al is, as always, a great guest; everyone please buy his book, because it's fantastic!!!!

  • Ep. #375: October 5-11, 1988 with John McAdam

Kris & David are joined by John McAdam (@CCMilani) this week for another episode of Between the Sheets, talking about the week of October 5-11, 1988.

    • We start off with John giving us his memories about the 1988 UAWF Convention in Memphis—the first for that group of fans—and what a doozy it was. We get stories about attending the live WMC studio taping and the Mid-South Coliseum show, as well as the awards banquet and shenanigans that took place after hours. We also play some clips, including Lance Russell’s speech, the WMC segment about the convention, and Paul E. Dangerously giving Dave Meltzer some "scoops."
    • Next, we go to the WWF, where we talk about the infamous Dynamite Kid/Jacques Rougeau "fight,” with Bix reading directly from Dynamite's book, as well as The Red Rooster & Bobby Heenan on The Brother Love Show and much more.
    • Then we go international, where we go over all the news and results from around the world, before coming back to the U.S.A. talking about the territory scene, featuring Eric Embry turning babyface in Dallas and a lot more.
    • We then close with Jim Crockett Promotions, where they turn the Road Warriors heel in a big angle that would flop, and we go over the reasons why it went that way. We also look at JCP more broadly, as there is a lot of uncertainty going around because of the Turner sale not being finalized as of yet. We also have some great clips with Ric Flair & Jim Cornette, as well.

This was a hoot of a show and a blast to record, so everyone check it out!!!

  • Ep. #374: September 28-October 4, 2005 with Eric Pavlacka

Kris & David are joined this week by Between The Sheets patron and Bloodstorm Pro promoter Eric Pavlacka (@JustExister) to discuss the week that was September 28-October 4, 2005. You can have the chance to join us for a show as well by signing up for our Patreon making a $50 (one segment) or $100 (whole show) pledge.

    • Eric wanted to do this week because it was the 17th anniversary of the legendary Kenta Kobashi vs. Samoa Joe match in New York for Ring of Honor, which was a show that both he and Bix were in attendance for. We talk in depth about that match as well as the whole ROH weekend in general, as they came back the next night in Philadelphia for Kobashi teaming with Low-Ki to face Joe & Homicide on a show that also featured the debut of Jim Cornette as the ROH authority figure and much more.
    • We also talk about the debut of TNA Impact on Spike TV featuring the debut of Team 3D, as well as how the promotion was handling the move.
    • We then go International talking about Team 3D making their debut in AJPW, a new IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt being made for NJPW, and Bob Sapp beating Jun Akiyama in WRESTLE-1, as well as all the Japanese indies, before going to England where we talk about the debut of 1PW featuring a stacked lineup, Antonio Peña coming back to AAA TV tapings while seriously ill, Atlantis making his official rudo debut at Arena Mexico, and tons more.
    • WWE closes the show as Vince McMahon makes a major play to hire Mike Goldberg to become the new lead announcer for Raw going into Raw Homecoming, their return to USA Network. We also have a very wacky SmackDown and much more, as well.

A tremendous show, so check it out!!! (And don’t miss the free preview of our latest Patreon show at the end!)

  • Ep. #373: September 21-26, 1998

Kris & David are guestless as we discuss the almost-week that was September 21-26, 1998.

    • We start the show by talking about what "really happened" between Jerry Lawler & Jim Carrey on the set of "Man on the Moon.” This was a pretty damn big story at the time, and we chronicle that before going into WWF proper, where we talk about the company changing their TV taping schedul, an episode of Raw featuring "There's Something About Terri,” and lots more.
    • We then go to International, talking about Mitsuharu Misawa getting more booking power in AJPW, Scott Norton becoming IWGP Champion in New Japan after a serious injury to Masahiro Chono, indie show wackiness, a promotional war in Austria, CMLL getting rid of foreigners, and so much more.
    • Next, we go back to the U.S. where we talk about all the indie stuff, including a crazy episode of ECW TV where they say farewell to The Sandman and WWF talent working all kinds of indies, among other things.
    • Then we close with WCW, where we talk about The Giant possibly jumping to the WWF, one of the most insane editions of Monday Nitro of the era featuring The Warrior, WCW getting their Jewish holidays confused, and quite a few more WCW EVERYBODY moments.

This is a great show, so listen now!!!!!!

Kris & David are guestless this week as we discuss the week-plus that was September 7-14, 1993.

We also talk about Vader losing the “Big Van” part of his name, the Shockmaster doing Shockmaster things on TV, and other random WCW EVERYBODY moments.
    • We then pivot to International where the Can-Ams win the All-Asian Tag Titles back in AJPW, NJPW vs. WAR shows are doing good business, plus everything else in Europeand Mexico.

    • We start the show by talking about the tragic death of Jay Youngblood at the age of 30, complete with Gordon Solie actually announcing it on Florida TV, which was extremely rare at the time. We then pivot to the WWF, where we talk about the hot streak they are on, as everything is hitting on all cylinders—inside and outside the ring—at the time. We also talk about Miss Elizabeth making her proper debut on Piper's Pit and how her character would evolve over time.
    • Then we go international, talking about a big AJPW show at Sumo Hall, Antonio Inoki regretting his deal with World Class, one of the last big UWF 1.0 shows, the Rougeaus and Garvins finishing up their feud in Montreal, and much more.
    • Next, we go back to the U.S. where we talk about Crockett Promotions’ treatment of Terry Taylor, big Labor Day shows in Florida & World Class, Norvell Austin returning to Continental, Mid-South going back to hardcore brawling heels on top, Mike Von Erich battling Toxic Shock Syndrome, and a whole lot more.

  • Ep. #369: August 24-30, 1994 with Joe Gagne

Kris & David are back with yet another episode of Between the Sheets, a Patreon request submitted by Allan Paisner who wanted us to do the week that was August 24-30, 1994. We are also joined by one of our favorite guests, Joe Gagne (@JoeGagne), which is always a treat.

    • We start off talking about WCW and one of the most watched wrestling matches in cable TV history, as Hulk Hogan faced off against Ric Flair at the Clash of the Champions in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We talk about the pre-match angle featuring Hulk Hogan getting his Nancy Kerrigan moment, as well as all the other hullabaloo surrounding that, plus the rest of the card, which was a helluva show all together. We also talk about the state of WCW at that time, as Hogan's power is growing fast and furious thanks to his business success, as well as the other WCW issues of the day.
    • We then go to Japan talking about everything there, especially FMW, WAR, & AJW having major shows doing great business, before going to Mexico, where AAA is doing big things and CMLL debuts in Houston, Texas.
    • We come back to the U.S. and go to ECW, where Shane Douglas threw down the NWA World Heavyweight Title belt after winning it in a tournament at the ECW Arena, proclaiming himself the new ECW WORLD Heavyweight Champion as Eastern Championship Wrestling became Extreme Championship Wrestling. We also have a big possible narrative shift taking place regarding this whole thing too, particularly how much of it was a double cross in the moment compared to later that week on TV. Then we talk about SMW, USWA, GWF, and other promotions, including some fun clips from SMW.
    • We close with the WWF, where we go in depth talking about SummerSlam ’94, featuring one amazing match, a terrible main event, and other assorted matches including Walter Payton having a blast with Razor Ramon. We also talk about Shawn Michaels & Diesel winning the tag titles the night before the PPV and having a great morning in NYC on Regis & Kathie Lee before flying back to the midwest for the big show, among all other SummerSlam fallout.

  • Ep. #368: August 17-23, 2001

Kris & David are guestless as we discuss the week that was August 17-23, 2001.

    • We start the show with the WWF, where we talk about their problems with DirecTV (which lasted several months) before pivoting into SummerSlam 2001, where we talk about the good and the bad from the second PPV show of the WCW/ECW invasion. We then go to Raw & Smackdown, including "Stone Cold" Steve Austin Appreciation Night and Kurt Angle's reaction to it, plus so much more.
    • Then we go to Japan, where we talk about Kazuyuki Fujita getting a hatchet wound cut into his forehead by a Mirko Cro Cop knee at K-1’s Andy Hug Memorial Show and how that changed both of their careers as well as New Japan in general, along with the tragic stroke suffered by Brian Johnston at that show. We also go over all the other news in Japan before going to Mexico, where we talk about a very solid scene at that time where everyone was doing well.
    • Then we come back to the U.S., where we talk about the Spanish Announce Team getting fired from CZW for interesting reasons, Steve Corino being the NWA Champion and getting mysteriously buried in the Observer again, Stacy Carter divorcing Jerry Lawler, a loaded California indie scene, and lots more.

2001 is always fun to talk about, and we had a blast doing this show, so we hope that you have the same experience as you listen!!!

  • Ep. #367: August 7-16, 1988 with Gregg Serota

Kris & David are joined by Gregg Serota (@GreggSerota) this week as we discuss the week-plus that was August 7th-16th, 1988, a show that Gregg requested we do with a $50 pledge on our Patreon.

    • We start the show with Jim Crockett Promotions, where lots of rumors are going around about a potential sale to Ted Turner, plus lots of other rumors about talent coming and going, as there was a lot of uncertainty going around. We also talk about the house shows for the week and play some great promos, as well.
    • Then we go International where we talk about Giant Baba coming to a crossroads regarding the future of Hiroshi Wajima, Antonio Inoki going 60 minutes with Tatsumi Fujinami, Akira Maeda's UWF continuing doing big business, Brian Pillman possibly leaving Stampede for Continental, and the state of WWC after the murder of Bruiser Brody.
    • Next, we go back to the United States, where we talk about upstart promotions springing up, Dave Meltzer's thoughts on Continental TV under Eddie Gilbert, Continental clips involving Burrhead Jones & Mr. Alan Martin, Brickhouse Brown finally having enough of Robert Fuller in Memphis, and much, much more.
    • We then close with the WWF, where Gregg joins us as we talk about the build to the first SummerSlam, house shows for the week with Owen Hart impressing nightly, Jimmy Hart on The Brother Love Show, and the rumor mill running wild over a possible Hulk Hogan vs. Mike Tyson match.

A very solid show, so everyone check it out!!!
