In recent years we've talked a lot about how we try to get clients to change their behaviours but how do we make changes in our practice or the profession? Realistically the method is the same but for both it can be really easy to fall into doing what's known in the behaviour change world as an "ISLAGIATT" (it seemed like a good idea at the time) approach. In this series of BEVApod Life, Marketing Executive Fiona chats to the winners of our new member of the month campaign. This month we get to know our October winner, John Pate from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. John was nominated by his colleague for his unwavering support to students and inspirational manner. Not only does he encourage students from all backgrounds to consider equine, but he's dedicated himself to raising money for Marie Curie in memory of his Mum.

Kate wasn't sure she wanted to be a vet and without the required subjects for traditional course entry, she embarked on Nottingham's 'prelim' course. She took her time exploring options with mixed practice, first opinion equine, before undertaking an internship. Following this she used her 'veterinary passport' to make the most of seeing the worlds and has settled for an antipodean life as a repro vet... for now! Currently she is working towards her Diploma with the American College of Theriogenologists via the alternate pathway, and has hopes for furthering assisted reproductive techniques in New Zealand's South Island.

Imogen is a first opinion practitioner at Bell Equine, in Kent. With unwavering passion she chairs the Ethics & Welfare Committee, heads projects which focus on welfare, and has started planning Congress 2026 with welfare forefront and centre. Far from covering the obvious ways in which our profession should consider welfare, her approach to 'everyday welfare' is set to provoke us into considering welfare as a concept in everything we do, both for ourselves and our patients.
