In this episode, Executive Producer Tony Viola takes over Tracey's Beyond Common Business Secrets Show and asks her to explain the difference between a good salon and an exceptional salon, and how business owners can achieve extraordinary results.
In this candid interview, Tracey explains the difference between a good salon and a truly exceptional salon. She advises business owners to set up systems so their employees know exactly what it takes for them to get to the next level, and to manage your systems, not people because creative people cannot be managed.
Tracey also discusses her secrets to hiring top talent -- including the importance of getting a second opinion and her secret use of a $20 dollar bill to find out who's trustworthy and who's not.
The episode also features Tracey's take on how the pandemic has upended the salon business when a salon loft or suite is the best choice, and why working at Best Cuts or a national chain operation may be a good move for certain stylists when they are just getting started.
Tracey also shared her thoughts about cosmetology school: "The one thing that's left out is that at school they never say. You're an entrepreneur now, because whether you work for a salon company or you do decide to go to the salon suite and do something on your own, rent a chair or however you want to do it, you are essentially in business for yourself, even if you are paid by commission. You are essentially paid by what you produce. So for the rest of your life, you are essentially writing your own paycheck. They never talk about this at cosmetology school. I always say to my cosmetology school owner friends that I would like to teach this segment for you, I will tell new salon professionals what they need to know and welcome them to entrepreneurship. Now for the rest of your life, you're in charge of writing your own paycheck. Nobody else, just you."
After a few more questions about the salon business, Tony concluded the show by adding his take: "I really like the Beyond Common goal-setting guidebook training and some of the resources that you've been able to put together for people. As a business owner, a lot of times the people who haven't owned a business at all want to give you advice, they don't always understand or really get it. They may give you good advice at times and they may give you valuable suggestions. But a lot of times if you own a company, and need help it's really a good idea to talk to someone else who's actually gone through the real process in their own businesses. Like what it means to have had to make payroll, had to hire, had to make tough decisions, had customers that weren't happy, and then had to figure out why.
How do you grow the business? All of the day-to-day management challenges, even if you're working at a place, unless you're the actual owner or the person signing that check, a lot of times that those challenges you can learn from. I'm not saying you can't learn from being there. I'm not saying that people who haven't owned a business don't have any good ideas but I just think that there's a unique kinship or camaraderie between business owners that can really hit some highlights or brainstorm a little bit about how to get to the next level.
I would say to the business owners out there, listening.....
