"I feel like I've always been one of those people that in a crisis, I get really clear headed. I have action items and I'm good at directing people and saying, do this, and suppressing anything else. And then after it's all under control by someone else, I lose my mind."

"It's like you say one thing and in a split second, our brains have gone down five different rabbit holes and immediately we're at something else, that in our brain makes sense that it's related, and [neurotypical] people are like, how did you go from here to here?  It doesn't make any sense to them."

"They're running a hundred meter sprint and we're running a hundred meter sprint with hurdles. Those are two completely different races." 

In this episode, Rachel shares how her daughter's ADHD diagnosis led to her seeking an evaluation for herself, and how all the things she originally thought were character flaws turned out to be symptoms of undiagnosed (and untreated) ADHD. Too often girls and women fly under the radar because our symptoms don't present as the classic "six year old boy jumping off the desk in a classroom" thing. We talk about how we've had to give 110% just to match what other people only need 60% to accomplish, not knowing why we struggled more than others.

We recently saw a quote on Instagram that read: "Getting diagnosed with ADHD as an adult feels like being told you suck at Mario Kart your whole life, and then finding out your game generates 40x more banana peels than it’s supposed to." 

This has definitely been our experience, and on this episode we discuss some of the ways how, looking back, ADHD affected us. But at the time, we didn't know that's what it was, so we often just assumed we were lazy, or annoying, or stupid. Spoiler: turns out we are none of those things, we just have ADHD!
