  • Episode 34 – The Early Church

The Christian Church has been around for nearly 2000 years and in that time has both shaped and been shaped by the culture in which it resides. What is there for us to gain by learning the stories of the first people to call themselves Christian? Should we return to ancient practices in lieu of modern sensibilities? All this and more on this week’s episode!

  • Episode 34 - The Early Church
Everything has a starting point. For the Church as we know it today that point was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Before that moment there were the Jewish people and the religion devoted to the one God. After that moment, the apostles and first believers had to figure out what it meant to follow Jesus when he was no longer with them. They started gathering in one another’s homes, meeting secretly and in public, sharing meals together, praying together, and using their possessions to care for one another. This is the early Church: before there were pastors or councils or popes or a buildings or even a New Testament there were people of faith trying to follow Jesus and supporting one another.
What would we gain by recapturing some of the themes and practices of the early Church? What do we share in common and what are we thankful is different? On this episode Katie and Pastor David are tackling these questions and challenging us all to rethink our current practices and may lift up some practices from those who had walked with Jesus and were the first to receive the Holy Spirit.
We hope you enjoy this episode!

  • Episode 33 - Women in Ministry: The First Witnesses to the Resurrection
Throughout history women have had an incredible role to play in leadership, politics, business, and shaping the world we live in. But for most of the life of the Christian Church women have not been permitted to be pastors or leaders in ministry. In the last 100 years this has started to shift and in the ELCA women have been ordained as pastors or officially called to other forms of rostered leadership for nearly 50 years. But for many people in the world the biblical picture is one that still paints women as sub-ordinate to men and not capable of being leaders in the church. In this week’s episode the Beyond Sunday team is celebrating the gifts of women serving and ministry and tackling the challenges that women still face in the Church. If you have a story about being a woman in ministry we would love to hear from you! Send us your stories at [email protected].

  • Episode 32 - Workin' 9-5!
We don’t stop being a Christian the moment we walk through the door to our jobs, so what does it mean for us to be a Christian in the workplace? We’re jumping into another study from our friends at Barna and trying to get an answer to this and other questions.
Are you in the workplace every day (home, office, field)? We want to hear about your experiences being a Christian at work! What are you challenges? What are your joys? What do you wish you knew how do to better? Send us an e-mail at [email protected] and let us know!
Here is the study that we will be discussing for most of the episode: https://www.barna.com/research/sacred-secular-divide/
*EPISODE NOTE: Pastor David was not feeling well at the time of recording so we apologize for the occasional sounds of him coughing up a lung in the background*

  • Episode 31 - Heaven and Hell
Today the Beyond Sunday Team is tackling one of the most widely discussed (and misunderstood?) topics with in the Christian faith: Where do we go when we die? A lot of our contemporary views of Heaven and Hell are rooted in the popular culture of the Middle Ages, but what does scripture say about the afterlife? These are issues that are facing the entire world even outside the walls of the church. Are we going to see harps and clouds? Fire and tormentors? If God is all loving, how can hell continue to exist? There is plenty of room for reasonable Christians to disagree and we are going to tackle this challenge head on. The Beyond Sunday Team hopes that this helps you engage in this important conversation in a new way.
