In a shot heard around the American soccer universe the New York Cosmos joined the revived NASL in 2012, abruptly ending conversations between MLS and NASL on collaboration and eventually creating a new partnership between MLS and USL PRO. USL had basically been left for dead by MLS after its problems between 2009-11.

We cover the events from 2009 to 2013 starting when a group of USL teams left the league to form their own league and culminating in 2013 when the USL and MLS began a partnership agreement.
