In this episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy, Dr. Meaghan discusses the need for sunlight. This conversation stems not only from really getting into the research of the benefits of Vitamin D, but also the conversation that we need to have that it is vital to get enough sunlight exposure.
Dr. Meaghan talks throughout the podcast about the vital role of vitamin D and the need for sunlight exposure. Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in maintaining calcium balance, promoting bone health, preventing falls and fractures, and supporting overall well-being. However, the significance of vitamin D extends far beyond bone health, with research linking it to various conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer, autoimmune and infectious diseases, among others.
25-Vitamin D deficiency has risen significantly in recent times and is higher in certain populations and is associated with increased mortality rates, infections, and a range of diseases.
Mounting evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency may be linked to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. We explore the findings of a study that analyzed vitamin D levels in the US population, revealing a high prevalence of deficiency, particularly among minority groups. These findings underline the importance of maintaining healthy vitamin D levels.
The episode emphasizes the significance of sunlight exposure in vitamin D synthesis, noting that about 50% to 90% of vitamin D is absorbed through the skin via sunlight. However, several factors, including season, time of day, latitude, altitude, air pollution, and skin pigmentation, influence sun-induced vitamin D synthesis. We address the need for sensible sun exposure recommendations, advocating for approximately 20 minutes of daily sunshine with over 40% of the skin exposed.
Dr Meaghan also explores recent research from the University of South Australia, which establishes a strong association between vitamin D deficiency and premature death and that WHO states that 340,000 Americans die each year due to not enough sun exposure.
Join us in this episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy to gain valuable insights into the vital role of vitamin D and the importance of embracing sunlight exposure for overall health and well-being.
