Din & Daf: Conceptual Analysis of Halakha Through Case Study with Dr. Elana Stein Hain
Back on Shevuot 7b we discussed the systemic problem of tum’ah meeting kedusha. We will use the case of the kohen gadol’s diadem - the tzitz - to take a step back and examine the different ways that halakha handles the confrontation between tum’ah and kedusha.

Din & Daf: Conceptual Analysis of Halakha Through Case Study with Dr. Elana Stein Hain
This week’s daf yomi introduces the ruling of R. Zera that a situation that allows for the flour and oil to be mixed in the korban mincha (e.g., a vessel that can hold enough for that mixing) is both necessary and sufficient even if that mixing is never done. This is a fascinating concept - namely that potential for a particular action is enough even if the action never happens - and it is applied to other realms of halakha as well. In this shiur we will examine this concept and what it teaches us about halakha.

The Chumash presents the sin of piggul as eating a korban past its allotted time. Chazal, however, explain it as intending to eat (or do other parts of the worship) past the allotted time. How should we understanding this difference? In this shiur, we will examine a few approaches to the gap between peshat (=plain contextual meaning) and derash (=rabbinic interpretation) and will understand more about the world of korbanot in the process.

The _omer_ sacrifice, brought on the second day of Pesach, renders chadash (new grain) permissible to eat. Or, at least, that's what we thought -- until, as we begin Masechet Menachot, we encounter the position of R. Yochanan and Reish Lakish, who contest that assumption. What, then, permits chadash? And what, for them, is the significance of the ome sacrifice? Join us for our first Gefet of this masechet, as we enter into a new set of halakhic concepts: the prohibition of chadash and the korban haomer.Gefet Ep 203Menachot 5Gefet with Rabbanit Yael Shimoni and Shalhevet Schwartz is in collaboration with Yeshivat Drisha. The korban mincha (flour offering) is presented at the outset of Vayikra between the korban olah (fully burnt offering) and the korban shelamim (peace offering, eaten partially by the altar, partially by the owners and partially by the kohanim). In Vayikra 6:10, the korban mincha is compared to both the korban chatat (sin offering) and the korban asham (guilt-offering). So, what exactly is the korban mincha? What is flour doing in a world of meat offerings? How does the mincha fit into the symbolism of korbanot?

For over a thousand years, the people of Israel have had, in turn, a Tabernacle, a First Temple, and a Second Temple. Which of them should we miss? What is unique about each? And how does it relate to exile and redemption?
