    This special episode of Beyond The Scope features a panel discussion with the 3 current Presidents of Digital Pathology societies on 3 different continents. Junya Fukuoka MD, PhD is a lung pathologist and President of the Japanese Society of Digital Pathology. Norman Zerbe is a computer scientist and President of the European Society of Digital and Integrative Pathology. Esther Abels is a clinical and regulatory expert and President of the Digital Pathology Association in North America. Topics included in the panel discussion are: 1) The state of DP/AI adoption on each continent, 2) Ethical and regulatory considerations surrounding new pathology technology, 3) Standards for emerging technologies, and 4) Advice to pathologists and vendors looking to move the industry forward.

    Giovanni and David are joined by Aleksandra Zuraw DVM, a fellow podcaster and founder of www.digitalpathologyplace.com. Dr. Zuraw is a veterinary pathologist working for Charles River Labs CRO on pre-clinical drug discovery studies. Digital Pathology Place is a website featuring a podcast, blog, webinars, and news items related to digital pathology. This episode is the first installment featuring the digital pathology podcasters getting together to discuss hot topics. The result is a general discussion on digital pathology adoption and reactions to the recently published guidelines for validating clinical and pre-clinical digital pathology applications.

    Dr. Lewis Hassell is a pathologist and Director of Anatomic Pathology at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He joins Beyond the Scope to introduce the Open Pathology Education Network (OPEN) and discuss the challenges currently facing the global pathology workforce. OPEN is a platform that aims to provide remote and digital education to pathologists in underserved areas of the world; they recently launched the first pilot programs in Vietnam. Dr. Hassell also shares his insights on how learnings from the COVID 19 pandemic are transforming the way we educate the next generation of pathologists.     As one of the earliest adopters of digital pathology, Eric Glassy has been at the forefront of most of the major DP/AI innovations in the past 25 years. Eric joins Beyond The Scope to guide us through his career long journey with digital pathology. Serving on numerous boards and committees for organizations like the DPA, CAP, and API, Eric also discusses all of the work related to the CMS waiver for remote sign out (including where we currently stand today). Eric is the Medical Director of Affiliated Pathology Medical Group, a community pathology practice primarily serving Southern California. Therefore, he appropriately presents the benefits and perils of using DP/AI in the community setting.
