Jesus gathered with his Twelve disciple on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread for the Passover Meal as commanded by God through Moses. It commemorated by means of a ordered ritual meal the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt by means of the blood of a sacrificial lamb whose blood was applied to their dwellings. When the death angel went through the land in judgment those who were in their homes with the covered blood were passed over and then brought out the next day. This was in fulfillment of God's promise in Exodus 6:6-8: " Therefore tell the children of Israel, ‘I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments. I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it to you for a heritage: I am Yahweh.’”
Jesus is now to go to the cross and literally be the true Passover Lamb who brings deliverance from sin and judgment by his shed blood. Taking two elements from the Passover meal, Jesus gives his followers the sign of the New Covenant in a meal we call the "Lord's Supper." Mark 14:22-24 states, "As they were eating, he took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many."
As the Apostle Paul says, "For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. Therefore let’s keep the feast, not with old yeast, neither with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." 1 Corinthians 5:17b-18

On Tuesday of the week of Jesus' crucifixion he was asked a number of questions by the religious authorities and parties. Their purpose was to drive a wedge between the people and Jesus. Luke tells us "he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words." Luke 19:47-48
So one after another group came to him with questions. The first question was about his authority. The second was a political-theological question on taxes. Now some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came up and questioned him. They related a story of 7 brothers who in succession married the same woman in fulfillment of a law concerning the necessity of a family heir. "In the resurrection who will have her as wife?" They were asking a foolish question to make fun of the doctrine of the resurrection from the dead (see Mark 12:18ff). We can learn much from Jesus' reply to these religious unbelievers about God, death and the life to come following the resurrection of the dead.

On Tuesday of the week when Jesus was executed, his religious political enemies sought to entrap him by various trick questions. The first one was the political question on the payment of taxes. It is a theological-political question that relates to life in the society and to life as a Christian. If he had said, "Pay the taxes," the Jewish people who resented Rome would possibly have turned on him and if he had said, "Do not pay the taxes," then he would have been in trouble with the political power of the Roman occupiers.

Jesus on the way to his execution heard many voices. Voices of sorrow and lament. Voices of mockery and lies. Voices raised in curse and abuse. But Jesus also spoke. On the way he stopped to give a prophecy. From the cross he uttered prayer words and words of acceptance and assurance of eternal life to the repentant thief who believed in him. This is a reading from the passion narrative according to Luke, with comments.

So often we do not take the time to read the detailed accounts of the sufferings, trials and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ. All four gospel writers- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have left their written account to his death, burial and resurrection. This is Mark's account which relies on the Apostle Peter plus his own personal knowledge. In these words the Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus, the Son of Man, delivered to death on the cross for our salvation.

It is Tuesday of the week in which Jesus will be crucified. After his joyous crowd reception and proclamation that he was Messiah, the Son of David, he had returned to the temple on Monday and cleared it of merchants. He had brought the temple to a temporary halt and chaos to call the Temple back to its true purpose. Now he has returned. The crowds of people with him and he teaches, preaches and heals them. Now a large delegation of interrogators approach with a challenge question. In the vernacular, Who do you think you are to do what you did? Who gave you this authority? This is the question so what is Jesus' answer?

After Jesus' celebrative ride of kingship into Jerusalem with the throngs of people he went into temple. He looked all round, observing the people and actions. Mark 11 relates that that on Sunday Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
But the next morning, the second day, our Monday, he returns with the Twelve and crowds await him. On this day he does two prophetic, provocative actions. They are related to two themes: God's temple and the Messiah as the Son of David. He rebukes and teaches by means of a rhetorical question. In other words, he threw down the gauntlet - the bold challenge to his enemies to carry out their stated intention among themselves, which was to kill him.

We usually began our consideration of Jesus' death by his riding into Jerusalem on a donkey when a large crowd welcomed him with acclamations of praise, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" However, there is a story before the story that set everything into play. Jesus arrived with his Twelve disciples 6 days before Passover to the home of Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Only 2 weeks before Jesus had raised Lazarus back to life after he had been in the tomb for 4 days. Because of this miracle and the once dead man now restored back to life and reunited with his sisters, a huge crowd was always present. It grew when Jesus arrived and this threw the religious leaders into a frenzy because people were increasingly believing in Jesus! This had to end. So they plotted to kill Lazarus as well as Jesus if they could isolate him away from the crowds. They had motive to kill but they needed either to assassinate him or somehow get the crowds to turn on him.
