We often hear people talk about the signs of the times or the signs of the end time. They speak about the natural disasters and the raging wars around the world especially in Europe and the Middle East, new diseases, etc. Now some of these things are mentioned in Mark 13 and Luke 21 plus Matthew 24-25 but according to Jesus' words recorded for us in these chapters we are often mistaken about their meaning. Join me in the reading of the text of Mark 13 with some comments and see what Jesus' answer is to his disciples' question.

Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

This message considers Jesus' saying: "Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Mark 11:23-24. We must consider the contexts in which Jesus states it. Jesus gives this saying on two separate occasions- the healing of the demonized boy who was rendered mute and deaf, and this occasion of his curing the fig tree.
What is the big deal about the fig tree that Jesus cursed It?
We consider Jesus' saying in the broader context of Mark's gospel narrative and Jesus' visits to the temple the week before he is crucified. To understand Bible verses we must interpret them in context.

Jesus uses an exaggerated illustration of mountain moving faith on several occasions to show the power of prayer offered in faith to God in his name, on his authority for the accomplishing of God's will and his glory. Matthew uses the statement twice, first in Matthew 17 when Jesus healed the boy of a deaf and mute spirit and later when he came into Jerusalem in Matthew 21. What is Jesus' main point and his teaching? This podcast considers the illustration in its contexts- immediate, connecting and broader New Testament context.

A look at Jesus statement in Luke 17:6 And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
Applying the skill of reading the sentence in its context to determine Jesus main point in using this hyperbole. Follow along with your Bible. The whole context is verses 1-10. Consider to whom he speaks and why. The apostle's request after hearing the teaching on the necessity to forgive your brother if he has wronged you and repented.
In light of the context what does verse 6 mean?

Paul exhorts that believers and especially teachers must handle God's written revelation with care. 2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Many times people uses verses from the Bible wrongly. This can result in people thinking a teaching is biblical when it fact it is error because the text has not been interpreted in context. This podcast is an introduction of this challenging task.
(My apology for a couple of glitches.)
Sample passage- Mark 11:23-24 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
This passage is often used incorrectly. Jesus says it more than once in different circumstances. We must consider the verses in their various contexts comparing scripture with scripture.

One of the most touching stories in the gospel narratives is the one that focuses in a blind beggar, Son of Timaeus (Bartimaeus). He heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing his way. Although the crowd was loud and thick he cried out, Jesus, Son of David have mercy on me! Rebuked by the crowd and sternly told to be quite he cried out even louder. Jesus, Son of David have mercy on me.
And his cry was heard. Jesus stopped. He said, Bring him to me. Bartimaeus threw off his cloak and went to Jesus.

God and clouds are often associated in the Scripture.
Sing to God! Sing praises to His name.
Exalt Him who rides on the clouds —
His name is Yahweh—and rejoice before Him. HCSB Psalm 68:4
There is a special cloud that we read about in the Old Testament and later we encounter it in the New Testament. In short, this cloud both hides God's full glory while at the same time conveys his special manifest presence and from it he communicates his revelation. In the Old Testament it appears first at the Exodus and later covers the mountain when Moses went up to receive God's revelation. After the Tabernacle is constructed we read according to Yahweh's instruction, we read in Exodus 4033ff: So Moses finished the work. Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out till the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of Yahweh was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys."
This happened again later at the temple dedication.
This cloud also has a special appearance in reference to Jesus Christ - on the Mount of his transfiguration, at his ascension into heaven, and at his return he will come again in the cloud of God's glorious presence.

The Bible witness is that Jesus the Son of Mary is the unique Son of God. This is basic Christian belief. But when did Jesus consciously know his unique identity as the Son of God, the Messiah? There are two events in his life that helps us answer this question and what it means for our salvation. The first event is when he was 12 years old talking in the temple to the religious leaders and teachers of Israel. After a 3 day search his parents found him in the temple. Mary asked him,“Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?”
The second event was at his baptism when he was 30 years of age and he began his ministry. These events must be understood in the light of his pre-existence as the Word (John 1:1-3, 14 and Philippians 2:5-9 and Hebrews 10:5ff

There are a number of incidents recording in the gospel narratives of Jesus casting out demons. He delivered people from demon activity in their lives that held them in some sort of captivity. Mark 9 records such an incident right after Jesus had been glorified on the mountain in view of three of his chosen disciples. When they descend the mountain and came to the 9 other disciples a large crowed was gathered and an argument was underway. It revolved around a father and his son who was afflicted by a demon and the disciples had not been able to make it leave. Jesus and the father talked and then Jesus vanquished the demon. Listen to the story with my running comments.

Peter, James, and John were the three disciples whom Jesus chose to accompany him at decisive points in his ministry and this day was one of those special and unique times. Jesus had them come with him up on the mountain to pray. Suddenly Jesus' appearance changed and he became brighter than the noonday sun. If this were not astonishing enough, two of the most prominent figures from the Old Testament, Moses and Elijah, appeared, talking to Jesus. The subject of their conversation was his coming "exodus" or departure at Jerusalem - in other words, the redemptive work of the cross. Then a cloud enveloped them all and a voice was heard, "This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!"'
What was happening on the mountain was that the Old Testament predictions from the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (represented by Elijah) regarding the coming Messiah were being fulfilled in Jesus - he was the One they were pointing to.
What the three disciples saw that day was not only a revelation that Jesus was the promised Messiah but his innate, divine glory, what had been hidden by his humanity, shown through before them and they got a glimpse of what all his people will see when he returns on the clouds of glory at the end of this age.
