Book Review of The Beauty in the Beast by Regina Puckett
This is a beautiful and touching story about how people are different in the ways they deal with pain, especially childhood pain, inflicted by parents or those who are supposed to give love. The two protagonists come from very painful childhood experiences: Holly, from hate and rejection, and Dr. Knight, from frustration and abuse, both by parents who should have shown them love. But each dealt with their past differently; Holly, with the determination not to allow her past to determine her future, and Dr. Knight, determined to allow his past to control his life, to the point of looking at life and living life with mistrust.
This book is very well written, grammatically correct. The only problem I found is with the formatting which was very poorly done, giving the impression that the author did not make use of professional formatting. Otherwise, this is a very enticing and interesting story.
Liked
This is a very short story that includes two main encounters between the main characters, Alec and Holly. Holly was really sweet. Despite Alec's behavior toward her, especially in a room full of other students, she continuously saw the good in him. Very few people would be able to see that. At the end of their first encounter, Holly finally stands up for herself and her choice of words was just right. Her encouragement to Alec at the end of the second encounter was beautiful, although it seemed a little unrealistic since they have just learned about each other.
I liked Alec's personality. We are able to see how he just can't keep himself from saying the stuff that he does to Holly. It makes him seem more realistic since not everyone in the world is like Holly. There was one thing that seemed a little iffy to me. In the first encounter, the stuff that he says to Holly is not only cruel, but not something that would go unnoticed at a university setting.
For some reason, a lot of the more contemporary stories that are similar to the Beauty and the Beast, tend to make the Beast like character a little too beastly than needed. I say this because this story reminded me of the Belle and the Beast, a Hallmark Christian Romance. In this movie, the male depicted as the beast, goes extremely angry one second and then calms down immediately the next second. Although Alec doesn't do the screaming and yelling, there was some similarity between the two. This story was definitely better than that movie but I couldn't stop myself from making the comparison.
All in all, I liked it! The plot was different and nicely organized. The story ends a little too quickly but it does become sweet when Alec's feelings are revealed. It was especially nice to relax and read for the current cold weather.
Needed more...
This story had potential, but it ultimately fell flat to me.
