The community of Judique lost one of its most renowned native sons this week. The Hon. William (Bill) Malcolm MacEachern passed away in Halifax on March 1st. MacEachern was born in Judique South. He worked in the 50s and 60s as a journalist with the Toronto Star. A life-long Liberal, he went on to work for Prime Ministers Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau, and Deputy Prime Minister Allan J. MacEachen. In 1974, he was elected MLA for Inverness South, and was appointed Minister of Health and Registrar General, and later Minister of Social Services and the Status of Women. He served as a member of the Canadian Aviation Safety Board in Ottawa, where he was part of the team that investigated the Air India Flight 182 disaster. And he worked in various capacities to improve the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities in both Ontario and Nova Scotia. Morag Graham was a friend of Bill MacEachern and she joined Mainstreet.
