Binary System Podcast

Hey look at that, we’re back on schedule! Let’s see how long that lasts JUST KIDDING we know it won’t last long.

First up we’re spoiling all the spoilers for Lore Olympus episodes 197 (out now) and 198 (only available with the fast pass) and long story short, Ares is a sex pest, Zeus is a lying liar, and Rachel better not do something bad to those dogs.

After that we take a lightning-quick run through the first couple episodes of Stranger Things season 4 (body horror and mean girl bully drama ack), Arcane (so freaking pretty), Love Death + Robots (Night of the Mini Death hee hee hee), the Raised by Wolves cancellation (screw you, HBO Max), and the first season of Umbrella Academy (no surprise, Klaus is our favorite.)

Then we take a deeper dive into board game awesomeness and exactly which roller coasters are still giving us nightmares.

*SPOILER WARNING, WARNING FOR SPOILERS, SPOILING ALL THE THINGS*

Yes, the Binary System Podcast team has done the unthinkable, we’ve watched a new movie while it’s still in the theaters, so there’s a chance that a spoiler warning might actually be necessary.

“Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness” is one heck of a ride, and we’re both still giddy about it. Really giddy. If you’re looking for a well thought-out review where we discuss the intricacies of plot, character arcs, and various themes then this recap…is probably not for you. For everyone else, listen in as we fangirl about each and every one of the things we loved about the movie in no particular order.

For once we had a plan! We talked about the latest two episodes of Lore Olympus, and asked the important questions: WHAT is happening to the ruling gods, and HOW is it all Zeus’ fault? (Because you know it is.)

After that we set out to recap the “Three Robots” episode of Love, Death + Robots season 3, and maybe discuss a couple episodes of the deliciously gorgeous Arcane. And then we promptly veered off into tangents about World War Z, layoffs, tech billionaires, Jeff Smith, surviving the apocalypse with a desk job, that series of Dinotopia books from the 90s, and Dr. Strangelove. Nobody is surprised.

Anyway, giant spoiler warnings for episodes 195 and 196 of Lore Olympus, episodes 3 and 4 of Arcane, the Three Robots episodes of Love Death + Robots, and the ending to Dr. Strangelove.

James Gurney’s prints of his Dinotopia artwork are always worth a look.

Here’s Jeff Smith’s tweet about the Bone cartoon not working out. Again. Sigh.

We mention the Lore Olympians fan group all the time, they’re a great source of info about the episodes, you can find them on instagram.

It’s been a long time since Cecil and Carlos have been able to take a vacation (I’m sure we all know what that’s like) so this week they dropped Esteban off with Cecil’s sister and headed off to the Big City! No, not New York, the other Big City, the one with Middle Park, and a big lake where you can feed the ichthyosaurs, and the obligatory political protestors throwing rocks at the sun.

But in amongst the boring old tourist stuff is a solution to a mystery that’s been bugging Cecil for six months: where has his cat gotten to?

After the Welcome To Night Vale recap we mention a few things that we’re utterly failing to keep up with (Arcane, Russian Doll, the new Doctor Strange movie that we’ve only been waiting to see for months) since we’re too busy watching Beastars. Again. And we also briefly discuss a 1980’s comic book property that we used to be rabid fans of and now we’re sadly letting go because it’s just not appealing anymore. (No, not Transformers, the other one.)

First up we’re recapping the latest Night Vale episode, as Cecil searches for the lost cat (“…cat? Probably a cat.”) Khoshekh, with the help of a pet psychic and random people who say vague and upsetting things.

Then we jump into two episodes of Lore Olympus, one of which (episode 194) doesn’t come out till Saturday so if you’re not Fast Passing the episodes, spoilers ahoy! (It isn’t a spoiler to say Zeus is a JERK, we already knew that.)

Finally we go over the biggest nerd news of the week: we have a new Doctor! Congrats to Ncuti Gatwa, and welcome back to Russell T Davies, we’re so excited to see what the two of you get up to. Now we’ve gotta play catchup on all the episodes we missed YES WE KNOW. Bad Whovians, no cookie…

Yep, you read that right. We’d usually be recapping the latest episode of Welcome To Night Vale at this point, but instead we decided to spend an entire episode discussing Spider-Man: No Way Home which we FINALLY watched after, what, three months of saying we were going to?

And boy, do we have a lot to say, about the stuff we loved (cool fights, big surprises, and every scene with Doctor Strange’s magic), the stuff we didn’t quite think worked (wait, how do you even erase the memory of an entire person without leaving really big gaps?) and everything we hope gets talked about in Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness (short summary: Doctor Strange was being a great big jerk and everything that went wrong was his fault).

Gigantic spoiler warnings, since we’re going to spoil all the things about this movie. Heck, we even spoil things from a ten-year-old movie franchise, some of which we haven’t even seen.

It wasn’t even four months but it felt like forever! That’s right, this week we’re recapping the triumphant return of Lore Olympus! Chaos in the courtroom! Familiar faces! Tears! Rage! Heartbreak! Was it worth the wait? OF COURSE IT WAS.

(Short version: Zeus is a jerk and we can’t wait for the CONSEQUENCES.)

And we splurged on the Fast Pass (you knew we would) so giant great big spoiler warnings for both Episode 191, which dropped on April 23, and Episode 192, which drops for the non-fast-pass people on April 30. (We’ll give you a big spoiler warning before we talk about 192, promise.)

“Call me Cecil…”

Our favorite podcast is getting all-out literary as this week’s episode takes a few pages from Moby Dick and spins a tale about a hunt for a gigantic Librarian roaming the desert, occasionally pausing to reflect about the wisdom of accepting others as we learn to accept ourselves and…

…OMG, you guys? They didn’t play the intro music this episode! And Cecil never said “Welcome to Night Vale”! What does it all mean?! (It doesn’t mean anything. OR DOES IT.)

We also talk about the Netflix animated series “Arcane”, because we’re all about the pretty. And our loyal listeners will get to peer behind the curtain as we discover some news about “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, mid-recording.

Correction: The adaptation of “Murder On The Orient Express” that Kathryn saw was released in the 1970’s, not the 1960’s. And the new movie “Death on the Nile” is in fact made by the same people who made the 2017 adaptation of “Murder On The Orient Express”, which we really should have already known because they’re both starring AND directed by Kenneth Branagh.

The title of the episode pretty much says it all. The moon has gone missing (it’s always in the last place you look for it), and catching a glimpse of the static-filled hole in the Night Vale sky where it used to be is really unpleasant.

But do you know what other Earth-shattering events have happened? For the first time in two years, Kathryn was able to go to a live Welcome To Night Vale show, and Elizabeth was able to go to WonderCon! We’ve got the deets on cosplay, panels, last-minute cast changes, and a motel in LA that, honest, was nicer than it looked.
