  • Binary System Podcast #308: …how bout them Oscars?

Hey, remember that one year at the Oscars when they screwed up the envelopes and announced La La Land as the winner when it was really Moonlight? Gosh, was that uncomfortable, sure hope we never have to watch something that awkward ever again.

    OH NO.

Listen in as we break down the nominees and winners of the 2022 Oscars, our delight at Windshield Wiper winning Best Animated Short, our approval at a happy film like CODA getting the Oscar and OH YEAH WILL SMITH SLAPPED CHRIS ROCK.

After we finish calling the both of them a bunch of names, we move on to more fun subjects, like the latest issue of Saga, the travel plans for WonderCon, and the April return of Lore Olympus yaaaaaay!

  • Binary System Podcast #307: WTNV #204 “The Audition”

Auditions are open for the Night Vale Community Players production of Our Town, and Cecil is trying out for the part of The Stage Manager. The director’s going for more of a traditional interpretation (not like her Tartuffe in the nude, or The Iceman Cometh in space). But after growing up inside and adjacent to the theater, we can pretty much say that any live performance of a classic – even a really weird interpretation – counts to us as a “traditional” theater experience.

Except Cecil’s interpretation of Equus. Good God. No, Cecil, Equus is not just a story about “a little boy who likes horsies”, the heck is the matter with you?

The theater-centric episode lets us wander off into tangents like Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood and Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights. Elizabeth’s also seen all of season 2 of Raised By Wolves, and we have to talk for a bit about the endless creativity of Transformers fan artists. (Mermaid variants are optional, crossovers with Gargoyles are fairly common, smut is pretty much mandatory.)

  • Binary System Podcast #306: the return of Saga, Killing Eve, and Transformers

After three years one of our favorite comics is back from hiatus! Massive great big spoiler warnings because we go into all kinds of detail about Saga (both the most recent issues and just about everything before the hiatus) and why this comic ripped our hearts out. Aaaaaand it looks like it’s going to continue to rip our hearts out because when things go sideways in this series it happens really freaking fast.

To keep with the theme of love, death, and dismemberment, Elizabeth started watching Killing Eve, a great show with action, humor, and a very high body count; Kathryn’s rewatching Peaky Blinders in preparation for more violence and heartbreak in the final season; and we’re both not completely sorry that we missed TFcon LA because our Transformers love is at a lull and we’re very sad about it. (We’d drown our sorrows by putting together a Flame Toys Windblade model kit IF WE HAD ONE.)

  • Binary System Podcast #305: WTNV #203 “The Kareem Nazari Show” and Angel Heart

It’s another fun, short-story type of Welcome To Night Vale episode this week. This might be another good introductory episode for someone who isn’t familiar with Night Vale, even if they don’t know who Intern Nazari is, or what this conspiracy theory is about the moon not being real, or why people seem to have trouble pronouncing the word “Michigan”.

But what we really want to talk about is the 1987 horror movie “Angel Heart”, which Elizabeth watched this week for the first time in a long while, and which just so happened to turn 35 years old last Sunday. Listen in as we absolutely fail to give a coherent recap of this film, and instead talk about all the bits we liked and all the random digressions we wander off to as soon as we get distracted.

(Not kidding about the digressions, this episode shows a pretty good cross-section of our brains as we discuss (among other things): the NFL concussion scandal, an off-the-grid city in the Sonoran Desert, the temperature of the water at California beaches versus Florida beaches, that time we watched Gone With The Wind in history class, and some of the horror movies we watched a few decades ago in Elizabeth’s apartment in Asheville.)

  • Binary System Podcast #304: Animation Episode (Oscar 2022 nominations)

So while we’d like to say something glib about the state of the world (global pandemic, political dumpster fire, quickly escalating international conflict) it just doesn’t seem like something we can joke about? So we’re going to go watch some cartoons instead.

Between the two of us we’ve seen all the Oscar-nominated animated shorts, and we both finally watched Encanto, so we’re talking about everything we loved (or disliked, or really disliked) about all of them. Plus we throw in a bonus animated short from 2019, and discuss whether or not it’s possible to throw together a good steampunk mask in 29 days. (It is. – Kathryn.) (IT ISN’T. – Elizabeth.)

  • Binary System Podcast #303: WTNV #202 “The Day After The Day” and Raised By Wolves

In addition to being a very poetic episode about how human beings process trauma and time, this week’s episode of Welcome To Night Vale is also topical. I mean really topical, touching on current events that everyone in the world is following right now.

And by that, I of course mean Wordle. If you’re looking for a hint, today’s answer has a silent “y” and no umlauts. You’re welcome.

Meanwhile Elizabeth has watched four Season Two episodes of Raised By Wolves, but Kathryn’s only watched one. So, you know, spoilers for just that one episode as we talk about the fact that Mother and Father don’t have pockets, and wonder who the heck scouted Kepler 22-b and decided that a planet with acid seas, gigantic holes to the core, and radioactive vegetables was somehow a good spot to revive the human race.

The We Were All Raised By Wolves podcast has some very insightful comments on season one. The intro to the episode 10 recap really seems to imply that the host, Peter, has passed away, but there’s recent activity on his reddit account? So we have no idea, but we hope for the best.

Correction: After review by an expert on history (ie: someone with more knowledge than us)(ie: Nathan), it turns out that there wasn’t a vaccine for the Spanish Flu, since at the time scientists were still looking for a bacterial cause instead of a virus. There WAS a vaccine for smallpox, and that’s what inspired some of the political cartoons about the dangers of anti-vax sentiment, like the one scanned from the 1930’s booklet Health In Pictures.

  • Binary System Podcast #302: Raised By Wolves Season 1

“An android, a black hole, and a glass of milk walk into a bar…”

This week’s entire episode is about Raised by Wolves! Did we get caught up? Of course not! We managed to finish the first season just in time to be three episodes behind in the second season. And we still have a ton of questions: Who exactly is the orphan in the wilderness? Why do androids gotta be spitting up milk all the time? WHAT the heck is up with the SNAKE BABY?

  • Binary System Podcast #301: WTNV #201 “The Delivery Man”

“No weather, no war, no man, no illness, and no god may stop me from my duty. All people deserve prompt delivery. And all people eventually get what they deserve.”

This week’s episode of Welcome To Night Vale is a fascinating little short story about Night Vale’s newest character: The Delivery Man. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the pandemic, it’s that we all love getting a package delivered. Even if it’s being delivered by a mysteriously threatening figure with a drawn-on face, ground-down teeth, and a weird habit of counting his steps. (“Goooood old five…”)

After the recap we read aloud a Binary System Podcast super-fan’s letter about how to love a series with some disappointing episodes and a toxic fanbase, and how to keep loving a series when the creator turns out to be a pretty rotten human being.

We also talk (again) about some of the movies and TV shows we really need to catch up on, with a plan to finish at least one of them in time for next week’s podcast. Really. We mean it this time.

  • Binary System Podcast #300: We have a plan! Sort of!

Happy 300th episode! Holy cow, after 300 episodes of fan art and TV and movies and TV and web comics and podcasts and TV, what should we make the 300th episode about?

That’s right, this episode is about spoilers!

(Kidding. Except not really, because man alive are we going to spoil some plot points on this one.)

Listen in as we talk about our favorite episode from just about every TV show that ever ate our brains even a little bit, or at least the ones that we could remember on short notice. What order are they in? No idea! What criteria did we use? None whatsoever! This is just a random selection of shows we’ve loved where we’ve picked our favorite episode. Or episodes. Or favorite moments? You know, that one episode in the third or fourth season, with the actor who does that thing?

Thank you to everybody who’s tuned in. Whether you’ve listened to 300 episodes or just the one, please enjoy the randomness.

  • Binary System Podcast #299: Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Raised By Wolves

First up this week we’ve gotta talk about Spider-Man, because we just watched Far From Home!

No, not No Way Home. Far From Home. Yes, three years after it came out. We have no excuses. But we sure did love it. Listen in as we talk about the things we loved, the stuff that maybe wasn’t for us, and the ways the story kept surprising the heck out of us.

After that we’ve got a spoileriffic recap of the first half of season one of Raised By Wolves, because we’ve never seen anything like that first episode. If you haven’t seen it yet, seriously, treat yourself, you won’t be sorry. Well, okay, you might, because it’s incredibly violent, but wow is it pretty.

(Apologies for the airplane-hangar noise in the background of this episode: Kathryn thought that maybe the sound of her 3D printer wouldn’t be picked up by her microphone, but she has a surprisingly good microphone so it totally was.)

Correction: (Well, confirmation of some things we were struggling to remember.) The name of the planet in Raised By Wolves is Kepler-22b. The name of Tony’s virtual assistant is E.D.I.T.H. They even spelled it out for us in the movie: Even Dead, I’m The Hero. We have zero excuses, except we’re bad at names.
