Binge Breakers - Bulimia Recovery episodes

  • Emotional Eating | Is it bad?

Emotional eating is something normal eaters do. Yet I see so many people that struggle with bulimia and binge eating feel like an absolute failure if they emotionally eat. They associate it with their behaviors, see it as a gateway to binging or not aligning with their idea of "perfect eating", and let it almost drive more binging and compensatory behaviors.

Emotional eating shouldn't be demonized or seen as incorrect. The only concern should be if you only use food to cope with any emotion, positive or negative. Food is a way we bond, celebrate, mourn, and console. It can even be a good way to deal. But if you're only relying on food to bring you back down or up in life, it creates more problems.

It may make you overly focused on food, create cycles of binging and purging, and leave you feeling like the only way to handle anything is through food when there are many viable, and more effective, ways to handle stress and other emotions.

Emotional eating is a part of a full life, but it's not the only life.

Today's episode covers this topic. Listen if you feel guilty every time you emotionally eat. It may dispel some of your preconceived notions and help you navigate when and when not to emotionally eat.

Today’s special podcast episode is with one of my amazing clients - Jana.

One thing I love about Jana is how frank she is. On this podcast she’ll give you her honest feedback on what she struggled with in recovery and what she learned along the way.

    Some key topics we cover:

Bulimia isn’t just a young person’s thing - though Jana struggled with disorder eating for a long time her bulimia didn’t start till she was in her 50’s after the loss of both her parents in a 6 month period

Experiencing weight gain in recovery and how she looked at it.

What it’s like to be in recovery while having an extremely active partner with different fitness goals & the feeling of inferiority.

Dealing with the feeling of being full and not purging combined with her condition of gastroparesis.

How she’s been since working together & advice she’d give to anyone struggling.

  • Stopping Purging Before Stopping Binging in Bulimia Recovery + Life Updates

Should you stop purging before attempting to address binging? Let me first clarify by saying purging of any kind should never be utilized as a tool. It has severe health consequences and keeps you stuck in the cycle of bulimia for various reasons. However, there are multiple ways to recover.

For me, I addressed the binging first. Committing became more important after I stopped binging as more urges arose to purge on my intuitive eating journey. The reason addressed the binging first was simply because I was not willing or in a place to be ready to give up purging.

In hindsight, I could have and should have given up purging as soon as possible as it did perpetuate the cycle. However, it worked out regardless. In today's episode, we discuss what you want to consider when addressing both challenges, the benefits of addressing purging first, and if you are unwilling to go there yet.

Plus I also give you some life updates. :)

  • Trusting Yourself In Bulimia Recovery

After experiencing a lack of trust in myself this past week I wanted to discuss that personal story on the podcast. If you struggle with bulimia you likely also struggle to trust yourself with many things. This is one of the reasons it's so hard to recover since trust is the foundation you need in order to take action that helps you make progress and create that confidence that builds trust. On the podcast, I talk about how you can think of trust differently and grant trust now.

  • What You Do In the Beginning VS. The end of Bulimia Recovery

What you do in recovery is not what you’ll do at the end of recovery or out of recovery.

    The way you eat.

    The way you process emotions.

The way you handle urges and the difficulty level they feel like will change.

The thoughts you think, how you perceive things, the way you address life without your eating disorder will be different.

The problem is people think in the beginning of their recovery whatever they are doing, the good and the bad will be forever.

That they have to handle incredibly difficult urges every single day.

That they will always eat like they’ve just been starving for 12 months.

    No… they won’t.

So please listen to this episode if you’re worried that whatever you’re doing will be forever. It won’t and thinking that may create self-sabotage at the exact point where you need to keep going a little bit longer.
