On a recent BingeCast, Law and I discussed the insanity of The Seven Five, a story about a handful of corrupt New York City cops who were into some real heinous shit in one of New York City’s toughest precincts.  At the center of the story is the terrifying yet charismatic Mike Dowd, who served as the ringleader and chief instigator of these corrupt cops.  After that podcast was released, a Twitter exchange between a listener, ourselves and Mike lead to setting up a time for us to chat.  We don’t do many interviews at BingeMedia.net (though that may change), but we eagerly jumped at the opportunity to speak with Mike.  Turns out, he’s even more fascinating to talk to on the phone.

In this episode we learn about what the movie got right and wrong, how he feels about his former partner and friend, and what his job prospects are like now that he’s out of jail and the movie has hit the mainstream.

Welcome to another hampering episode of the Binge Movie Aftertaste. Not only are Jason and I both hammered out of our minds, we speak clearly enough to talk to this week’s guest Brendan Mertens about a movie he is making which tells the story of the fandom behind a little franchise called Ghostbusters. Not to mention a whole hell of a lot more in this podcast full of stories about everyone’s favorite team that busts ghosts.

First thing’s first though. Before getting to Brendan, Jason and I take some time to thank all you listeners for not only supporting US, but also for the support you have all layered into the entire site since Law and Moreno’s episode of Monday Morning Moreno a few weeks back. We also talk about some minor changes made to this show, as Moreno has decided that he doesn’t like us anymore. No, not really. But he is making his Fridays open so that we can do whatever the hell we want on the air, which unfortunately means we will be doing it without him for at least the time being. All this makes Jason and I naturally come to the conclusion that this means when he’s not around we will just talk shit about him. Yes, we are immature filmmaking assholes.

Speaking of which, this leads us into getting this week’s guest Brendan Mertens on the line. Brendan is definitely full of stories, and we talk about everything from how Ghostbusters came into his life to some highlights from his podcast Cross The Streams. Between interviewing Ernie Hudson a couple of times and even meeting Dan Aykroyd himself, you can tell Brendan certainly loved doing the show. Jason and I express amazement that Mertens was able to do a podcast on the same subject for five years, while we struggle to do one on a different topic every couple weeks. With how busy Brendan is, he reveals the podcast is on temporary hiatus. Will it come back? Only time will tell.

After talking a little about the prospect of this upcoming all female Ghostbusters film being any good, Jason leaves the show to drink in peace, and Brendan & I get to his upcoming documentary Ghostheads. Brendan talks about how doing the podcast certainly led to doing the movie, and what it is like narrowing hundreds of hours worth of footage down to 75 minutes.

Shut up and Color

This week’s Monday Morning Moreno is another switcheroo from the standard movie and TV talk.  You should listen to this week’s BingeCast to get your fix on that.  Eddie from Cali is a long time listener, going back to the ol’ JoBlo Movie Podcast, and spends most of his time these days as a personal trainer and going to school for nutrition, fitness, and being The Hulk.  Seriously, Eddie is a beast.

I invited Eddie on because he’s been helping me get on a nutritional and physical program.  Getting old blows, as Jim Law knows all too well, and since I’m in my mid to late 30s now, I want to be able to train the right way, the smart way, without risking any long term damage to my body.  Because my body is after all, a wonderland.

Eddie spent most of his 20s in the Air Force, with deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan where he worked closely with interpreters.  Having a brother who served in the Marine Corps, friends in the Army who have seen combat, and knowing that the life of a soldier is NOT for me, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the military.  And being that I’m not fit for that lifestyle, I’m constantly fascinated by the mindset and fortitued of servicemen and women.  This was also a big reason why I wanted him on the show.

There’s some movie talk towards the end, but if you’re looking for something different like my up close and personal talk with Luke and his venture into full time writing, or random Cottage Life talk with Jim Law, I think you’ll enjoy this one.  Eddie is a great dude with a good head on his massive shoulders and he and I plan to do another round, more focused on movies, in the future.

Seriously, get active people. Even if it’s a 15 minute walk, or walking to the bar, just do it. You owe it to yourself.

I’ll get off my high horse right now.  Why is my horse Supka’d as fuck?
