Welcome to an all-new wrestling edition of the Binge SportsCast. We don’t even have to talk about a racist rant or yet another dead wrestler this time. Batch and I actually get 90 minutes just to talk about actual wrestling. So we’re calling that a win.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, we’re putting this show up a day early due to the fact that it’s a BIG weekend and we wanted to make sure you got our preview of tonight’s NXT Takeover: Brooklyn. Batch and I run down the card that includes a ladder match main event for the NXT Championship as Kevin Owens takes on Finn Balor, a great women’s matchup that pits Bayley against Sasha Banks, the TV debut of Uhaa Nation….errr, Apollo Crews, and much more.

From there, we get into Sunday night’s Summerslam card, which features Batch’s hero, John Cena, vying for his record-tying 16th championship title against Seth Rollins. Batch comes up with a crazy scenario that nobody would see coming. It’s not going to happen, but hey, this is professional wrestling. You never know. We also discuss whether or not The Undertaker survives his match with Brock Lesnar, and I give my thoughts on the match that I think will steal the show.

In addition to that, we run down the season finale of Lucha Underground, its future on Netflix, as well as some of our favorite Summerslam matches and moments.

It’s a jam-packed show and one of the best ones we’ve done so far. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Jim Law had an existential weekend in which he was trying to find “where his wedding game be at.”  That’s a direct quote.  I’m not lying.  Garrett, Ammon and Moreno pick up the slack by talking about Disneyland and how it impacted Garrett’s nuts, more wedding talk and how Supka’d Ammon is.  In fact, we changed being “Supka’d” to being “Green Line’d”.  Green….weed….ya get it?

We kick things off by listening to a clip from the Binge Aftertaste’s interview with Noah Danby and his Steven Seagal stories. From there we hit TV Round Up where we talk about Ballers, our anticipation of the Evil Dead TV series and the second season finale of True Detective and why Ammon hated it (listen to Garrett and I discuss it in depth on Monday Morning Moreno).

We listen to quite possibly the drunkest/Green Line’d Google Voice of all time.

It’s not everyday I get to talk to two of my favorite people I’ve never met in the real world.  And within the next month, that will all change.  I asked Garrett Collins, host of the Binge Aftertaste, to join me in discussing a few things I’ve had on my mind lately.  Most notably, those two things are the True Detective S2 finale and all of the crazy changes that are going on in Garrett’s life right now (think Caitlyn Jenner).

Before that, we call the great Adam Simon because we’re bored with our own stories and voices.  Adam, en route to Utah, hypes up the world premiere of Synapse this Saturday August 22nd at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con!  Adam has been on the Binge Aftertaste a few times, as well as the director Kenlon Clark.  These guys are super pumped about this project and we can’t wait to check it out.  Adam also talks about karaoke’ing with and getting choked out by Noah Danby, a project he wants to work on with Clifton Collins Jr., and how he’s going to crash my wedding and sing Spanish love songs.  Orale! Bring it!

After Adam dumps our asses, Garrett and I get down to business.  I was so affected by Frank’s death that I had to write about it.  Being that Garrett is one of the few people that I know that loved it, I had to talk to him about it.  What I wrote, the “companion piece”, that we discuss in this show is below.  We then get into what has been going on in Garrett’s life and how he’s dealt with some of the hurdles and hoops he’s had to go through.  This gets DEEP yo.  If you liked my discussion with Luke, you’ll definitely love this.  Enjoy.

Dignity and Frank Semyon

It was early on that I wrote off the second season of True Detective, and for the most part, I maintain my

feeling that the season was self-flagellating with poorly written dialogue, bad storytelling masked as

“mystery” or “noir”, and acting that didn’t live up to the combine talents of those involved.

Nevertheless, and despite my own misgivings as well others’ opinions that I respected, I pushed forward.

What was it that kept me engaged each week? Was I hate-watching this? Was the viewing experience

itself my own exercise in masochism, deliberately tying myself to the tracks, waiting for the shit train to

plow over me?

 

Whatever the reason, I continued watching without consequence and took in the season finale, partially

thankful that it was finally over and then surprised by how much I liked it. Looking back, alright, that

was a first for the season. The “shootout” episode was ok, Woodrough’s being killed was tragic but

needed for the story, Ana was always annoying, and Ray and Frank were the more interesting

characters, even though their storylines were sometimes flimsy at best. I went to bed that night like I

normally do.

 

And then something happened.

 

I woke up in the middle of the night.

 

I was haunted.

 

I couldn’t get back to sleep.

 

And my mind went back to the season finale. In particular, all I saw was Frank Semyon, limping through

the desert like a wounded lion, still determined, still maintaining the strength to push on. And it wasn’t

even so much for Jordan and the plan to hightail it to Venezuela that he was pushing on for, but himself.

It’s a drive to move forward, in spite of everything, even with a fatal gut wound. I realized that what

Frank was fighting for, and had always fought for, was maintaining his dignity, the last remaining virtue

he had when everything else was out of his control.

 

If you think back to Frank’s storyline in the season, all of the long, ponderous monologues and

reflections, you realize that Frank’s ultimate fate was hi[...]

Welcome to another edition of the Binge Movie Aftertaste where Jason and I….

Ok, we are a few months shy of celebrating our one year anniversary doing the show, and I have already run out of ways to intro it. Maybe I need more beer. Anyway, this is another action packed show with highlights including Jason and I reviewing some films, a revisit of a childhood favorite, and talking mad shit about Steven Seagal.

Jason and I begin the show by pimping out the Binge Media merchandise store, with Jason saying he is shocked at just how many different types of content the site covers. We then go on to talk about a movie we both watched this week called House of Manson, which is directed by Brandon Slagle. We both decided we liked the movie enough to recommend it with just a few minor quips. Jason then pimps out a movie which has a whopping 56% on Rotten Tomatoes called Infini.

We then get Noah Danby on the line. And what an interview he turns out to be.  He starts off talking about what it was like working on shows like Smallville, with an interesting bit on how the leads of these shows are kind of supposed to be the ring leaders. We then move on to when Danby worked on the Steven Seagal film Exit Wounds. Let’s just say we will never look at car windows the same again. Jason even adds a bit about how Seagal was supposed to work with Lance Henriksen, only to have Seagal put the kabosh on it.

Danby has much better things to say about Vin Diesel, who he worked with on the 2013 science fiction film Riddick. Diesel turned out to be a hell of a producer and star, taking his entire crew out to dinner prior to shooting. A pet project of Diesel’s, Danby reveals he remained a nice guy despite constantly fighting for the Riddick vision to remain. And then we proceed to talk even more shit about Steven Seagal.

All this plus Noah’s grand King of Hollywood vision, what Jason can expect when he finally picks back up on Danby’s show Defiance, what it was like meeting people like Arnold Schwarzenegger (complete with a fantastic impression) and Nicolas Winding Refn, and so much more. Thanks again to Noah for a hell of an interview, and he is invited back anytime.

From here, and after talking even more shit about Steven Seagal, Jason and I bring up 1987’s The Monster Squad, as I decided to revisit it in light of the backlash I received from my recent Grumblings column that mentioned it as a movie which hasn’t aged well. Somehow, this conversation moved on to discussions about Iron Man 3, Josh Trank, Jason’s review of the new Vacation movie, and we conclude by talking about remakes, as well as even more pimping of the site. Because, we are great employees.

On a recent BingeCast, Law and I discussed the insanity of The Seven Five, a story about a handful of corrupt New York City cops who were into some real heinous shit in one of New York City’s toughest precincts.  At the center of the story is the terrifying yet charismatic Mike Dowd, who served as the ringleader and chief instigator of these corrupt cops.  After that podcast was released, a Twitter exchange between a listener, ourselves and Mike lead to setting up a time for us to chat.  We don’t do many interviews at BingeMedia.net (though that may change), but we eagerly jumped at the opportunity to speak with Mike.  Turns out, he’s even more fascinating to talk to on the phone.

In this episode we learn about what the movie got right and wrong, how he feels about his former partner and friend, and what his job prospects are like now that he’s out of jail and the movie has hit the mainstream.
