We’ve all seen the hype video before the bottom of the 9th inning. Is it just us, or is this just a little patronizing? Sure, this is Birdland – the home of Orioles Magic. At any time, one of the good guys could put the game away in dramatic fashion, and the totals would become lovely.
But that isn’t always guaranteed to happen. And when things really aren’t going our way, sometimes we just wish that we could have the luxury of brooding in peace.
Jake put together a more “realistic” clip set, that may not rev you up for a comeback, but will certainly match your dark mood.

Tread on the Tires

We look at the Orioles’ remaining season, and discuss what the team has to do in the next 30+ games to hold on to its playoff spot. Whether it be health or inconsistency, the O’s have their own problems, which are magnified by a handful of AL teams who are coming on strong, down the stretch.
In addition, we consider what the most important series of the season will be.

Attendance Woes

Sometimes, you just need to vent. We did just that in this segment. We’re disappointed by the attendance in this – the key portion of the Orioles season. Sure, the weather was crappy in the Spring. Yes, part of the Baltimore metropolitan area is busy with school this season. But the showing from the fans has been disappointing here and now.
For a fan base that waited 14 years for a team to be competitive, they’re not bothering to show up for that same team in a pennant race.

August Redux

Scott Magness would like your attention, because he’s about to take some O’s fans to task. This week has been hard. The Orioles have undeniably been riding the Struggle Bus during August. So what? This is not the time to hit the panic button. That time may come, but this is not a replay of August 2015, when the Orioles eliminated themselves from contention with two six-game losing streaks, separated by a single win.
Instead, the Orioles are having a rough go of it, largely due to a usual strength of theirs.

So… we may have freaked out a little bit during Sunday’s game. Things looked really bleak, and we may have “acted out” on social media. So sue us, these things happen. In a 162-game season, the players have good days and bad days, and so, too, do we.
This got us to thinking… what are you freaking out about, Birdland? And just how freaked out are you? To track the results, we created the BIRDCON system – one that counts down from 5 (the best) to 1 (the most freaked out).
We talk through six “freak outs” and three “geek outs” for the season, rating each on the BIRDCON scale.
