Bitches on Comics

We talk to fiction writer Izzy Wasserstein about her new short story collection from Neon Hemlock: All the Hometowns You Can’t Stay Away From, how the collection came together, the overall shape of the collection and so much more! We also talk Star Wars, hurting our siblings as kids, and why problematic queer characters are so desperately needed.

We interview Brent Fisher and Michele Abounader about their LGBTQIA+ anthology The Color of Always, getting into gatekeeping in comics, the magic of queer anthologies, building creators up, and telling their own stories. We also discuss their new comics publisher Extra Pages Press and their upcoming projects!

We talk to the delightful Sara Tomko and Alice Wetterlund about their SYFY tv show Resident Alien, airing now. They get into what it’s like working with a collaborative creative team behind the scenes, how they bonded as friends both on- and off-screen, and why an alien gives us such an incredible lens into what it means to be human.

We talk to the incredible Wendy Chin-Tanner about the publishing company she runs with her husband Tyler: A Wave Blue World. We discuss their anthologies Young Men in Love, Embodied, and Deadbeats. We also talk about Wendy’s own writing in comics and poetry, her upcoming novel, and her journey as an artist, academic, editor, and mother.

We have an absolute blast talking to Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti! We talk about The Invincible Red Sonja and what was on their bucket list for Sonja. They also take us behind the scenes on writing Harley Quinn, getting into working with a publisher, how they see all their HQ titles connecting, her relationship with Poison Ivy, and so much more.

We talk to the incredible comic creator and editor Alina Pete about Indigenous storytelling, her experiences as a Cree storyteller, and translating Indigenous stories to the graphic form. Alina tells us about The Woman in the Woods and Other North American Stories and so much more!

For our final Pride Extravaganza interview of 2022, we talk to Carmen Maria Machado about her memoir In the Dream House, her short story collection Her Body and Other Parties, and her graphic novel that absolutely rules The Low, Low Woods! We discuss the relationship between reality and speculative fiction, how trauma and abuse form us and who we choose to be in the aftermath, and the nature of being queer creatives.

In celebration of Pride, we host a roundtable with the good people of Silver Sprocket where we talk zines, zine-making, and the queer nature of zines. Publisher Avi Ehrlich discusses Silver Sprocket’s spirit of not asking for permission and supporting artists to be just that: artists. Creators Archie Bongiovanni (Grease Bats, Mimosa, Yes, I’m Flagging), and Eddy Atoms (Pinky and Pepper Forever) discuss their creative processes, the difference and overlap between comics and zines, how they bring that DIY attitude to everything they do, and more!

We interview Eliot Laurence about his series Motherland: Fort Salem, getting into what it’s like to create a show that’s lived in your mind for so long, why the show is queerer than you might think, why Raelle and Scylla (Raylla) absolutely rule, and how fandom can fuel art.

We talk to Hamish Steele, creator of Dead End: Paranormal Park, about his new Netflix series, what it was like to transition from the page to the screen with their original story, why fatphobia sneaks its way into animation, and why trans and queer representation thrives when it’s both overt and subtextual. Not only does the lovely Ayoola Solarin join to interview Hamish, but Ayoola sticks around to give us a super special peek behind the scenes!
