On Monday, the Democratic National Convention began in Chicago. Delegates from the Democratic Party, who represent the voters in their districts, will vote on party policy and confirm the nomination of Kamala Harris for the US presidential elections in November. About 30 of the delegates represent "uncommitted" voters. During the primaries, about 700,000 voters who would normally vote for the Democratic Party candidate voted uncommitted instead. If there are enough uncommitted voters, the representative for that region is not obligated to support the party's nominee, and would ideally represent their voter's demands at the Democratic National Convention. In this case, the uncommitted voters movement was in protest of the genocide in Gaza. On Sunday, protests in dozens of cities in the US and around the world called for "Not Another Bomb" to put pressure on Harris to stop sending weapons to Israel and therefore funding the genocide of Palestinians. Tens of thousands of people are expected to protest outside the convention.
Earlier this week, the Biden administration approved $20 billion in weapon transfers to Israel, despite growing calls for an arms embargo due to the human rights violations in Gaza. The package includes over $18 billion for aircraft and related equipment, $580 million for tactical vehicles, $100 million for advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, over $700 million in tank cartridges, and $60 million for 120mm high explosive mortar cartridges. Last week, a poll conducted by Institute for Middle East Understanding found that large proportions of voters in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arizona would be more likely to vote for the Democratic presidential candidate in November if the candidate supported an arms embargo on Israel, meaning that they would oppose the US sending more weapons. Furthermore, the poll suggested that supporting an arms embargo would not result in losing any voters. Last week, a top adviser to the Kamala Harris presidential campaign told the New York Times that she does not support an arms embargo to Israel, meaning she will continue to support sending weapons.
Nigerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif is suing Elon Musk and author J.K. Rowling for creating a public harassment campaign against her. During an Olympic boxing match against Italian boxer Angela Carini, Carini ended the match after only 46 seconds, and told the media that she had never been hit that hard. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series and known for her anti-transgender views, along with Elon Musk accused Khelif of being a transgender woman, of being a man, and of having an unfair advantage in the fight. Khelif, who not transgender, has competed in many events as a female boxer. In 2023, the International Boxing Association accused her of having too much testosterone, but that decision was not considered legitimate by any other authority due to the IBA being wrought in corruption. As a result of the harassment she received, Khelif is suing Musk and Rowling, and there is a possibility that Donald Trump will be added to the lawsuit. All three of them used Musk's social media platform, X, to make the accusations. Critics of Musk and Rowling say that their accusations are based on racist stereotypes that use White women as the standard for femininity.
On Saturday, the Israeli military used bombs funded by the Biden Administration to kill 100 Palestinian refugees who were praying in a school. Thousands of Palestinians were sheltering in al-Tabin school in Gaza City during morning prayer when the US-made GBU-39 bomb was dropped without warning. The bodies of the victims were unrecognizable to family members. Rescue workers said there was not a single full body among the deceased. According to the news outlet Mondoweiss, doctors delivered bags full of human remains to families, each weighing 70 kg, and asked them to pray for them as if they were their family member's body. According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, Israel has bombed at least 21 schools that are serving as shelters in the past month alone. Israel claims that Hamas was using al-Tabin school as a command center, but has not been able to provide evidence for this, or for any other school it has bombed. Two days before the bombing, the Biden administration announced it was preparing to send another $3.5 billion to Israel to spend on weapons and military equipment.
On Thursday, Texas governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order requiring hospitals to obtain information about the immigration status of patients. Abbott claims that he is collecting data to determine the cost of healthcare to immigrants, and critics say that he is trying to agitate his anti-immigrant conservative base. In February, a similar law in Florida resulted in undocumented immigrants avoiding hospitals and clinics out of fear, according to a report by Politico. The law resulted in immigrants avoiding all health care clinics, even ones that were not affected by the decision. Unlike the Florida law under governor Ron DeSantis, Abbott's executive order applies to all clinics and hospitals, regardless of whether they receive federal funding. It is not clear how Abbott plans to use the patients' immigration information, but collecting it alone is not a violation of patient privacy rights. An investigation by KBBF in 2021, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, determined that immigrant communities are less likely to feel safe getting access to life-saving healthcare if they need to provide personal information such as country of origin.
Video footage of soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces sexually assaulting a Palestinian in a prison has been leaked by Israeli news channel N12. For months, Palestinians as young as 14 years old being held at the Sde Tiemen detention camp had been testifying that they were being tortured by the IDF soldiers who operate the camp. On July 29th, Israeli police detained nine IDF soldiers at the prison as part of an investigation into torture and rape allegations. As a result, mobs of right-wing Israeli settlers attacked and tried to enter to prison in protest. Several members of the Knesset, which is the Israeli equivalent of Congress, joined the attackers and condemned the police for arresting the soldiers. On Wednesday, Israeli news agency N12 released leaked video footage of a group of IDF soldiers raping a Palestinian man. The soldiers used their riot shields to form a circle around the man in order to block the security cameras from being able to see their actions. Israeli human rights group B'Tselem has stated that the IDF is, as a matter of policy, setting up torture camps for Palestinians.
Over the weekend, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that although it is not considered legitimate by most of the world, he believes causing the starvation and death of 2 million Palestinian civilians is justified. Speaking at a conference held by the Israeli news outlet Israel Hayom, Smotrich discussed the limits Israel faces due to world opinion. He said, "Nobody will let us cause 2 million civilians to die of hunger even though it might be justified and moral until our hostages are returned," and added, "We live today in a certain reality, we need international legitimacy for this war." Smotrich is known for saying that Palestinians do not exist and is a strong proponent of illegally expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank. He has also attempted to make it illegal for real estate companies to sell homes to Arabs, saying "I believe in God's words. I prefer that Jews make a living and wouldn't sell a house to Arabs." Human Rights Watch stated, "Despite children dying from starvation and famine in Gaza, the Israeli authorities are still blocking aid." The American Friends Service Committee said that in Gaza, "there are 600,000 children on the edge of death."

On Tuesday, Democratic Party presidential nominee Kamala Harris bragged about developing a conservative immigration bill that was rejected by Donald Trump. During a speech in Atlanta, she said "Our administration worked on the most significant border security bill in decades. Some of the most conservative Republicans (…) supported the bill. Even the Border Patrol endorsed it." She then said, "It was all set to pass, but at the last minute, Trump directed his allies in the Senate to vote it down," This caused the audience to express disapproval, to which she responded, "Right!" In Washington, DC, activists led by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) are meeting with congress members to get their support for bill HR1511, known as the registry bill. Angelica Salas, Executive Director of CHIRLA, told the media that because Harris is from California and is the daughter of immigrants, she understands the immigrant community. Salas said that Harris "has stood with us in our worst moments (…) She told them that she would be a fighter for them. And she kept her promise." At the time of this writing, activists have not released a statement about Harris' speech.

The American Federation of Teachers, which has 1.8 million members, has signed on to a resolution calling for a general strike in the US in 2028. Last year, the United Auto Workers union organized against the big three US car manufacturers in one of the biggest and most radical strikes in recent decades. Earlier this year, the same union passed a resolution to encourage all local unions to set up their contracts such that they all end on the same day, May 1st, 2028. In this way, employers will have to choose between meeting the demands of all the unions for new contracts or risk having all the unions go on strike together in solidarity. Last week, the American Federation of Teachers signed on to the resolution, and called on labor organizations to "find creative ways to maximize our economic power and fight against corporate greed," and to "consider this common expiration as a useful tactic in the fight to advance racial, economic, and social justice." Some unions, such as the Chicago Teachers Union had previously already proposed May 1st, 2028 as their contract expiration date.

Monday, July 29th will be the two year anniversary of the killing of David Pelaez Chavez by Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy Michael Dietrick. On July 29th 2022, a resident of Knights Valley called the police and said that Chavez, an immigrant farmworker, had attempted to break into their home. Sheriff Deputies arrived and chased Chavez into a creek, where he picked up a rock. With the rock in one hand and a garden tool in the other, he was shot three times, in the head and in the chest, by Dietrick. In body-worn camera footage of the incident, Deputies can be heard yelling instructions at Chavez, but according to family members, it is unlikely that he could understand them because he didn't speak English. On October 31st of the same year, the Pelaez Chavez family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. That lawsuit has a two-year statute of limitations meaning that if no decision is made before then, the case will be dismissed. Local activists have been working with the Pelaez Chavez family to raise awareness about the case. The officers involved in the shooting are still working for the Sherrif's Department.
