Israel has begun its invasion of Rafah despite the warnings of every major human rights organization and the US government. Since October 7th, Israel has been bombing and laying siege to Gaza, starting in the North and moving South over the course of 7 months. Surviving civilians have been moved to Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, making it one of the most densely populated places in the world with one and a half million people in 25 square miles. For this reason, if Israel bombed and invaded Rafah in the same way it has done to other cities in Gaza, it could be one of the worst human rights disasters in history. Ahead of the invasion, the Israeli army dropped thousands of flyers in Rafah warning civilians that if they do not move westward away from Eastern Rafah they will be bombed. Since October 7th, Israel has warned civilians about where it was going to bomb, but has always eventually bombed the place it told the civilians to go to. Israel also shut down the offices of Al-Jazeera, the largest news organization in Gaza, before beginning the invasion. Hamas has announced it has accepted a ceasefire deal from the 3rd party negotiations of Qatar, but it is not known if Israel has agreed.

On Thursday, President Biden addressed the nationwide student pro-Palestine protests in a speech from the White House. The focus of his speech was to criticize the protests for being unlawful and what he called "violent." The president said several times that the student protesters were violent, but did not make any mention of the large group of people who violently attacked the students at UCLA on Tuesday, or the police who attacked them in the early hours of Thursday, with rubber bullets, pepper spray and batons. Several students were seriously injured as a result of being shot in the face with rubber bullets. The president said, "Dissent is essential to democracy. But dissent must never lead to disorder." Gilad Erdan, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, said in a speech on Friday, "We always knew that Hamas hides in schools. We just didn't realize it's not only schools in Gaza. It's also Harvard, Columbia, and many elite universities." Israel has justified the bombing of schools, hospitals, refugee camps, and the entirety of the Gaza Strip by asserting that Hamas fighters were hiding in those places.

Nueva York.
On Tuesday night, several of the student protest encampments in solidarity with Palestine were violently attacked. In New York City, the administrations of Columbia University and City University of New York sent riot police to attack the encampments. Police arrested over 300 people, and Minouche Shafik, president of Columbia University, asked police to stay on the campus permanently until at least May 17th to ensure that the encampment is not reestablished. CNN reporter Miguel Marquez said of the attack, "I've covered lots of this sort of stuff around the world, and I've never seen this many police moving into one area." CNN Senior Correspondent Shimon Prokupecz said, "I've covered many protests here in New York. I have never seen a response like this." At the University of California in Los Angeles, a group of over 100 people carrying Israeli flags and chanting "U.S.A." attacked the encampment using sticks, poles, pepper spray and fire works. Several people were seriously injured. Although the attack began just before midnight, police did not arrive until 1:30 AM and did not take any actions until 3:00 AM.

The US student protest movement to stop the genocide in Palestine continues. On Wednesday, students at the prestigious Sciences Po university in Paris began the first encampment outside of the US. At Emory University in Atlanta, state and local police attacked a student encampment with stun guns and tear gas, and wrestled several people to the ground, including professors. Adam Smith, senior Democratic Congressman, said that the student protesters were "leftist fascists" and "authoritarians" that must be arrested. Meanwhile, Israel had bombed every single university in Gaza by January 17th, and 80% of all schools in Gaza have been bombed. 261 teachers and 95 university professors have been killed, and 60% of all educational facilities such as libraries have been destroyed. The organization Palestinian Youth Movement, New York City Chapter, posted messages on their social media pages written at a refugee camp in Gaza. The messages said, "The students give us hope," "The children [of] Gaza [are] proud of you," "From Rafah we send you strength," and "Thank you students for Columbia University."
University students around the country have joined the protest encampment movement in solidarity with Palestine. Last week, students at Columbia university set up an encampment on campus to protest the genocide in Gaza, and police responded by arresting over 100 students. Since then, protest encampments have been set up at Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley, Cal Poly, MIT, Tufts, NYU, Brown University, and many more. Critics say that the protests are dangerous because they create violence against Jewish people. However, according to the Anti Defamation League, the most active pro-Israel organization in the US, 100% of hate crimes against Jewish people in the US between 2002 and 2023 were committed by groups or individuals with right wing politics, and zero were committed by groups with left wing politics or by Arabs or Muslims. After October 7th, the Anti Defamation League changed its criteria for what constitutes a hate crime to include any anti-Zionist slogans or chants. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu, who is currently carrying out a genocide that the students are protesting, said that the protests are "horrific" and that "antisemitic mobs" are taking over the universities.

After police arrested over 100 student protesters at Columbia University last week, a protest movement in solidarity with Gaza has erupted at several of the most prestigious universities in the country. Since October 7th, students at Columbia University have been organizing to end the administration's investments in companies that profit from the genocide in Gaza. According to university officials, some of these protests have included attacks against Jews, and protest organizers say that they are not associated with anyone who would say or do anything antisemitic. Last week, student protesters with a group called Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) held an encampment outside the university and were attacked by police, who arrested over 100 people. In response, students have organized solidarity encampments at some of the most prestigious universities in the US including Yale, MIT, Tufts, and NYU. On their website, CUAD say they are "a continuation of the Vietnam anti-war movement and the movement to divest from apartheid South Africa. We support freedom and justice for the Palestinian people, and for all people."

Israel has launched a military drone attack on Iran again, after bombing an Iranian embassy in Syria on April 1st. After Iran retaliated against Israel for the April 1st attack last week, US officials announced that they had reached a deal with Israel; the US would agree to support Israel's invasion of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, in exchange for Israel agreeing to stop attacking Iran. Israel's attack on Iran, therefore, appears to be a violation of that agreement, but many experts, including Mairav Zonszein, a senior Israel analyst for the International Crisis Group say that the agreement was mostly a media spectacle as opposed to serious foreign policy. If Israel continues to attack Iran, it could trigger a war between the US and Iran, due to US support for Israel and the existing tension between the US and Iran. In other news, a report by ProPublica shows that several months ago, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken received information from the State Department about specific Israeli military units that were confirmed to be committing human rights abuses including murder, torture, and sexual abuse of a teenager, but Blinken has chosen to ignore the reports.

Salimos a averiguar qué estaba pasando.
The human rights group Euro-Med has confirmed that the Israeli military is using drones to play recordings of children crying and then shooting those who are following the sounds to try to help. According to residents of the Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza, the IDF maintains drones at all hours of the night that shoot anything that moves. One survivor said, "At night (…) we heard voices of girls and women screaming: 'Come, help me, I am injured!' We went out to find out what was happening. No women were found, but we were directly targeted by a quadcopter drone (…) I fled inside, and two people right in front of me were seriously injured." Another survivor said, "This sound continued for about 10 to 15 minutes, but none of us went outside because [we] knew these were recordings from planes." Samira Abu al-Leil, a resident of the camp, told the media, "At night, the streets are usually empty and men are inside their homes (…) When the quadcopters open fire, they only hit the roofs and streets, they don't find any people to shoot. So they played these sounds because they know the nature of our society; they know that men were going to try to provide help. They wanted them to go out so that they could shoot them."

On April 13th, the Iranian military launched missiles into Israel in retaliation for the bombing of an Iranian embassy. Israel bombed the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria on April 1st in its war against Hezbollah, an Islamist group, and killed 16 people. Bombing an embassy, or any place of diplomacy, is considered an act of war by international law, and Iran's response falls within the guidelines of self defense. Iran's missiles, which were launched with 2 days of notice, were intercepted by Israel with the help of the US military, at the specific request of President Biden. So far there are no official reports of any casualties. Biden, who has for the past 6 months justified committing genocide of Palestinians on the basis of self defense, said the he condemns the Iranian response in the "strongest possible terms." For decades, experts have said that Israel wants to provoke a war between the US and Israel's enemies in the region. Columbian President Gustavo Petro said, "We are on the cusp of World War III, and the United States' support for genocide has set the world on fire."
