A federal judge recently granted final approval to the landmark House v. NCAA settlement, a decision that fundamentally reshapes the landscape of college athletics and effectively ends the NCAA's long-standing amateurism model.

The core changes include:

• Direct Payments to Athletes: Starting July 1, 2025, Division I schools will be allowed to directly pay athletes for their name, image, and likeness (NIL). This will be subject to a salary cap, initially set at approximately $20.5 million per school annually, which can increase each year. This is a massive shift, as athletes were previously prohibited from receiving direct payments from their schools.
• Back Pay for Past NIL Opportunities: The settlement includes a substantial $2.75 billion in damages to be paid out over 10 years to former and current Division I athletes who were unable to capitalize on NIL opportunities dating back to 2016.
• Roster Limits Replace Scholarship Limits: Instead of limiting scholarships, there will now be hard roster limits for each sport. While this could lead to some roster consolidation, it also means schools can offer full scholarships to every player on the roster within those limits.
• New NIL Clearinghouse: A new entity, "NIL Go," run by Deloitte, will review third-party NIL deals over $600 to ensure they represent "fair market value." This aims to bring more transparency and regulation to the booming NIL market.
• Shift in Enforcement: The "Power Four" conferences (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC) are expected to take a more prominent role in enforcing player compensation rules, while the NCAA will focus on other areas like eligibility and academic standards.

In essence, the House settlement ushers in an era where college athletes are directly compensated by their schools, blurring the lines between amateur and professional sports. This will lead to a new economic reality for athletic departments, with potential implications for resource allocation, competitive balance, and the future of non-revenue sports.
