TIP: Your love for your teen should not be kept secret. Say it, write it, share it.

TALE: From the day I packed my bags for USC and left the comfort of home, I have lived in 15 different places. The last place I lived I planted roots for 11 years and collected furniture, trinkets, books, journals, memories, and kitchen items for days. In June of 2016, I went through each drawer, closet, and room and carefully selected what to store and what to sell or give away. 

Years later I sat unpacking all that I had decided to keep. I spotted a big blue storage crate labeled, “Must keep Memories.” What was in there? Inside was a pale yellow box, an oversized envelope with Cinderella glued on top, and one large envelope labeled, “Letters from Mom.” This was my treasure. Over twenty love notes from my mother. I found one from prom night, my USC graduation, birthdays, wedding, and times of heartache. I’ve only re-read a few so far but while the words may differ, the message is always the same:

I love you, I’m proud of you, I admire you, Give your gift to others, Prioritize family, and my favorite message is, “You’ll always have me.”

TRUTH: As a parent, you have such limited time with your children, let alone your teens. They need to hear you say the words, and if you can’t say them, write it down, but do find a way to share. As the school year begins, I encourage you to take the time to write your child a letter; I mean handwritten, or at least typed and printed. The letters from my mom bring tears to my eyes and comfort to my soul just knowing that she is proud of me. On the days when I feel unsure of myself, all I have to do is read one of my treasures and Mom reminds me, “You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Keep Going!!!”
