January 13 The Notebook
A poignant love story that spans decades. The narrative is framed by the perspective of an elderly man, Noah, who is reading a notebook aloud to his wife, Allie, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and no longer recognizes him. Interwoven with this present-day struggle are flashbacks describing the intense, youthful romance between Noah and Allie, detailing their idyllic summer together and their forced separation due to societal class differences and the subsequent intervention of Allie's mother. The source explores themes of enduring love, memory loss, and second chances, culminating in Allie choosing to leave her fiancé, Lon, to reunite with Noah after seeing a newspaper article about him and realizing she still loved him.

January 12 Sputnik Sweetheart
Focuses on narrative elements, particularly the disappearance of the character Sumire while on a trip to Greece with her friend and boss, Miu. The unnamed narrator, who is deeply in love with Sumire, is called to the island by Miu and discovers Sumire’s writings, which explore her identity, her difficulty with writing, and her unrequited love for Miu. The narrative contrasts the deeply reflective, symbolic interior life of Sumire with the practical, often lonely reality experienced by the narrator and Miu.

January 10 Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War
A comprehensive look at the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), focusing heavily on the experiences of American and other foreign volunteers who fought for the Republican cause, such as those in the International Brigades. The excerpts describe the brutality and atrocities committed by Franco's Nationalist forces and their German and Italian allies, contrasting it with the idealistic but often chaotic nature of the Republican social revolution in regions like Catalonia. Furthermore, the source highlights the political complexities and internal conflicts within the Republic, particularly the tensions between Communists, anarchists, and the POUM, which sometimes led to violence and imprisonment for volunteers. Finally, the narrative examines the lack of support from Western democracies—including the U.S. government's neutrality and the critical role of American companies like Texaco in supplying Franco—and covers the long-term impact of the war on the lives of veterans and the geopolitical landscape leading into World War II.

January 05 Resilience from the Heart: The Power to Thrive in Life's Extremes
Explores the concepts of personal and community resilience in a time defined by global extremes such in climate, economy, and energy resources. The author advocates for a shift in thinking, arguing that solutions already exist for major global problems, but they require a change in perspective from a traditional, brain-centric worldview to one that embraces "heart intelligence" and heart-brain coherence. This approach blends scientific discoveries in areas like neurocardiology and quantum physics with ancient spiritual traditions, positing that the heart plays a critical role in intuition, well-being, and achieving a resilient lifestyle. The text frequently uses the concept of a "turning point"—an intentional choice to embrace change—as the key to transforming lives and overcoming global crises, offering practical steps and real-world examples to guide this transformation.
