One of the most commonly mentioned goals in the voice arts is that of "finding your authentic voice" (so much so that it even saw me put that phrase in quotes due to it having been rendered nearly a stereotype from over-use): that authentic voice that is your natural, base-line, foundational voice, and comes from the core of who you are. When doing so, for some, that means coming to terms with things like speech impediments. For others, it may be that their voice doesn't live in a register that they want it to. But for some, that journey goes much farther, and much deeper than merely "what I sound like," and goes all the way down to "who I truly am."

Bernadette "Bernie" Wagenblast is an iconic voice to millions of people, even though they might not know it, or her. For decades—and to this day—Bernie's voice guides countless travelers, commuters, and passengers through the maze that is mass transit in New York City and other areas of the Tri-State area with a calm and friendly tone that says "You're welcome here."

But until very recently, the person with that welcoming voice was searching for something themselves, and—now having found it—speaks up (and speaks out) with their true, authentic voice from here on out.

When it comes to narration—especially solo, long-form stuff like audiobooks—you as a producer typically wind up doing all the voices in a dialogue scene, including those of characters or subjects that aren't your natural gender presentation. This can be tricky to do without coming across as a ham-fisted caricature, or worse. To say that the VO world is “concerned” about Generative AI is a bit of an understatement, to be sure. There are so many questions: Should we do this? Should we do that? What should I put in my contracts, my emails? Should we actually be all that concerned? Well, the last one is more philosophical than practical, and right now—with voices already being apparently stolen (or at least misappropriated)—it seems a very appropriate move to speak with someone who actually can bring some clarity to the legalities of this whole thing.

Robert Sciglimpaglia, Esq, is a is licensed, practicing attorney (admitted to the bars of Connecticut and New York) and has been practicing law since 1991, with concentrations in (among other things) entertainment and copyright law, representing musical acts and bands, as well as representing actors and voice over artists in many facets of entertainment law, including representation agreements, contracts and copyright issues.
