  • The Filibuster and the Nuclear Option
Filibusters were particularly useful to Southern senators who sought to block civil rights legislation, including anti-lynching legislation, until cloture was invoked after a 60 day filibuster against the Civil Right Act of 1964. In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds to three-fifths, or 60 of the current one hundred senators.Senate rules
The action in 2017 has moved to the  Nuclear Option as tool of choice for reactionary lawmakerss. The nuclear or constitutional option is a  that allows the Senate to override a rule or precedent by a simple majority of 51 votes, instead of by a supermajority of 60 votes.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who says that once Democrats filibuster Judge Neil Gorsuch, the GOP’s unilateral response to confirm him on a simple majority vote will take senators “back to what was the tradition in the Senate” for confirming Supreme Court justices. We wanted access to the Ivy League schools, the professions, the clubs — everything. Wherever men could go and become successful, we wanted to be there, too.Representative Todd Akin, Republican of Missouri, after his statement in 2012 about “legitimate rape.” Such is the double standard from the abortion-rights mainstream media. If they choose, however, to be moms and wives and attend Bible study or bake cookies, they are “bitter clingers” and “deplorable.” Cleta Mitchell Washington Powerbroker for the  Rich

  • Baseball Opening Day 2017
As the Cardinals open their 125th anniversary season Sunday at Busch Stadium, Martinez will, for the first time in his career, start opening night and, for the first time since Johnny Lush did in 1909 for the Cardinals, throw a season-opening pitch to the reigning World Series champion Cubs.
The Cubs did not have a single homegrown pitcher on their World Series pitching staff. Three years earlier, the Cardinals had seven, not including Adam Wainwright, who was acquired via trade as a minor-leaguer. The Cubs will start this season without a homegrown pitcher in the rotation.
The Cardinals will have three, four if Wainwright counts.St. Louis Post-Dispatch

  • Trump Abolish Clean Air
The West Coast has lined up against President Donald Trump's rollback of the Clean Power Plan and will go its own way on energy, with the region's governors saying they will "assert our own 21st Century leadership and chart a different course." The divisions of America, not on culture but on climate and energy, were on display Tuesday, as well as the values of the actors. The governors of Washington, Oregon and California -- plus mayors of the Coast's major cities -- said in a letter that action on climate is urgent, and healthy for the economy as well as people that live on the "Left Coast.""We speak as a region of over 50 million people with a combined (gross domestic product) of $2.8 trillion," they said. "There is no question that to act on climate is to act in our best economic interests. Through expanded climate policies, we have grown jobs and expanded our economies while cleaning our air." Gutting the Clean Power Plan is a colossal mistake and defies science itself. Erasing climate change may take place in Donald Trump's mind, but nowhere else," Brown said. Vice President Al Gore, denounced the plan. But Trump said the effort would spark "a new energy revolution" and lead to "unbelievable" American prosperity.AP
