  • Remembering Patty Duke 1946-2016
Patty Duke, an Oscar-winning actress renowned at midcentury as a child star of stage, film and television, who, amid public struggles with bipolar disorder, went on to cultivate a respected career in adulthood as an actress and mental-health advocate, died on Tuesday at a hospital near her home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She was 69.
During her presidency, the Guild devised a low-budget motion picture agreement giving advantages to productions that hire more women, minorities, seniors, and disabled performers; the Screen Actors Guild Foundation was created; and two strikes were conducted (a six week animation strike in June/July 1987, and a three-week commercials strike in March/April 1988) New York Times

  • The Third Party and Bernie Sanders
I believe that should Clinton overcome Sanders and claim the Democratic nomination, the party will continue to be the champion of war and Wall Street, little changed by the primary competition. But perhaps after the comparative success of Sanders’s campaign, this state of affairs will invigorate more courageous candidates to follow his lead in challenging establishment, commercialized politics.Ralph Nader

  • The Arizona Primary a National Disgrace
What happened yesterday in Arizona should be considered a national disgrace. I got an email last night from a woman who waited five hours to vote in Arizona. Five hours. We don't know how many thousands of people didn't get to cast their ballots yesterday in Arizona because they couldn't afford to wait that long. Scenes on cable news last night showed hundreds of people in line at 11:30pm in Phoenix – more than four hours after polls closed. Voting should not be this difficult.. There were 70 percent fewer polling places this year than in 2012 in Phoenix's county. ..Bernie Sanders

  • President Obama Address to the Cuba People
Before I begin, please indulge me.  I want to comment on the terrorist attacks that have taken place in Brussels.  The thoughts and the prayers of the American people are with the people of Belgium.  We stand in solidarity with them in condemning these outrageous attacks against innocent people.  We will do whatever is necessary to support our friend and ally, Belgium, in bringing to justice those who are responsible.  And this is yet another reminder that the world must unite, we must be together, regardless of nationality, or race, or faith, in fighting against the scourge of terrorism.  We can -- and will -- defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world.“Cultivo una rosa blanca.”  (Applause.)  In his most famous poem, Jose Marti made this offering of friendship and peace to both his friend and his enemy.  Today, as the President of the United States of America, I offer the Cuban people el saludo de paz President Obama

  • The Reality TV Election
"Twenty-one years later, the era of so-called "reality TV" that the OJ Simpson trial launched with its slow-speed white Ford Bronco chase, bloody gloves and Kardashians (the series reminds us of how Simpson hid out in the bedroom of Kim Kardashian, daughter of his since-deceased pal Robert Kardashian) has led us to Trump's surprisingly successful presidential campaign A media system with fewer corporate gatekeepers is exciting. It allows unconventional ideas to get out and foster robust debate. But it also allows the powerful who are sufficiently media-savvy to bypass fact-checkers or ideas with which they don't agree".Clarence Page Chicago Tribune

The past week's political events that help shape American  politics.
Acontecimientos políticos de la semana pasada que ayudan a conformar el cuerpo político estadounidense
The Fat Lady still has not sung. It's not over. Please don't believe the media hype. Bernie lost by 2/10ths of a point in Missouri and got 32 delegates to Clinton's 31. He lost by 1.5 points in Illinois and received 67 delegates. Clinton received 68. If you care about your country, there is an internet full of information - you can choose what not to believe and what to believe, but first look at the information. Search the candidates' histories. Anybody can write a commercial -- I did it for 34 years. Anybody can write a speech or make a promise. But you need to dig deeper. Look further. It's not about what's best for the candidate or who deserves what. It's about what's good for the country - what's good for our children and our grandchildren's futures. It's not about who endorsed who - somebody could promise somebody's church a million dollars worth of benefits for their endorsement. This is not to say endorsements don't have any value. They do. But the most valuable tool is your mind. Take the time to research the candidates. If you're in a state that has not yet voted - or you know someone that is - don't listen to the media, don't listen to the establishment - learn for yourself. The most dangerous voter is an informed voter. The Bible says "My people perish for lack of knowledge." To those of you who have your minds made up and don't want to be confused by the facts - I beg you to open your mind, and get the facts. I promise you won't be confused.
