  • Elizabeth Warren and Black Lives Matter
Listen to the brave, powerful voices of today's new generation of civil rights leaders. Incredible voices. Listen to them say: "If I die in police custody, know that I did not commit suicide." Watch them march through the streets, "hands up don't shoot" - not to incite a riot, but to fight for their lives. To fight for their lives.
This is the reality all of us must confront, as uncomfortable and ugly as that reality may be. It comes to us to once again affirm that black lives matter, that black citizens matter, that black families matter.Elizabeth Warren
Democrats and Black Lives Matter still aren’t fully simpatico on racial inequality. In her speech, Warren went beyond criminal justice and voting rights—places of broad agreement among liberals and the public—to attack the racist housing policies that sustained segregation through the 20th century, and continue to shape present patterns and outcomes:Jamelle Bouie

  • The Life and Times of Yogi Berra
Yogi Berra, one of baseball’s greatest catchers and characters, who as a player was a mainstay of 10 Yankees championship teams and as a manager led both the Yankees and the Mets to the World Series — but who may be more widely known as an ungainly but lovable cultural figure, inspiring a cartoon character and issuing a seemingly limitless supply of unwittingly witty epigrams known as Yogi-isms — died on Tuesday. He was 90.NYT

  • Pope Francis in the Americans
On his first trip to America, Popa Francis is set to make a saint out of a 18th century missionary Junipero Serra who some say is more of a sinner. "It is very offensive to canonize the person who actually enslaved, whipped, tortured and separated families and destroyed our cultural and spiritual beliefs," said Valentin Lopez, chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band. "How can that behavior be recognized as saintly behavior?"

  • The Defect of Scott "Boss" Walker
It's not surprising from the perspective of the last few weeks," said Larry Sabato, a national political observer, who gave credit to Walker for getting out early."Some contenders look good on paper, but when they actually get out on the stump they fail to live up to their own hype," Sabato said. "I think he suffered a bit from a lack of preparedness."
Sabato said Walker seemed especially unprepared on foreign policy issues.
"He relied too heavily on a memorized speech," Sabato said. "People talked about Scott Walker, the automaton."
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, had a different take.
"As Governor Scott Walker leaves this race, this is much clear: You can't build a campaign by tearing working people down and attacking their aspirations for a better life," Weingarten said.Journal Sentinel
