We’ve seen even presidential candidates like Mike Huckabee joining her bandwagon here, why do you think they are joining in? Do you think they really believe her religious freedom is being violated? I think you used the right word, “Bandwagon.” I think they’re jumping on the bandwagon because they have political agendas apart from their religious concerns. I think because it does have a lot of political energy behind it and there’s a lot around the country who share those religious perspectives. So they are jumping on primarily for the religious mileage they’re getting from the issue and not the truth I think that’s spelled out in scripture - where it says that everyone be subject to governing authorities, of which she is not being subject herself. She’s decided to disobey the law rather than to uphold the law. Rev. Clay Calloway WDRB TV

  • Labour Day 2015
We remember Jerry Pippin on this Labour Day with his commentary from Labour Day 2013
Joe Biden's been a champion for working people all of his life. He's a blue-collar guy. And he is liked by the membership. He's liked by Americans. He'd make a good president. Hillary would make a good president. There's a number of people out there who I think will make good presidents. The question becomes are they willing to articulate a message that really says to our members, to the workers out there, "I'm not only going to talk about changing the rules of the economy, I'm going to fight to make them a reality." • Climate Change in Alaska
In his speech in Kotzebue, President Obama thanked Alaska Gov. Bill Walker and Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott for their recent leadership in helping pave the way for thousands more Alaskans to gain health care under Medicaid next year.
He also thrilled the town by saying he’d heard how well the members of his advance team had been treated in Kotzebue and said he had enjoyed the hospitality he’d gotten in Alaska. He said he was envious that President Warren Harding spent two weeks here – during a trip in 1923 --- but said he couldn't make such a lengthy trip because “can’t leave Congress alone that long.”President Obama

  • One Nation under God
The New Deal had passed a large number of measures that were regulating business in some ways for the first time, and it [had] empowered labor unions and given them a voice in the affairs of business. Corporate leaders resented both of these moves and so they launched a massive campaign of public relations designed to sell the values of free enterprise. The problem was that their naked appeals to the merits of capitalism were largely dismissed by the public.
The words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and the phrase "In God we trust" on the back of a dollar bill haven't been there as long as most Americans might think. Those references were inserted in the 1950s during the Eisenhower administration, the same decade that the National Prayer Breakfast was launched, according to writer Kevin Kruse. His new book is One Nation Under God. NPR

  • Katrina Ten Years Later
The racial disparity in the post-Katrina "recovery" is especially pronounced. A recent Louisiana State University survey found that almost 80 percent of white New Orleans residents say that the city has "mostly recovered" from the disaster, but some 60 percent of black New Orleans residents say the city has "mostly not recovered." African-Americans, reports 538.com, are less likely to be working than when the storm hit, more likely to be living in poverty, and the racial wage gap has grown. An estimated 100,000 of the city's poorest African-Americans have been unable to return.
Investments have been diverted away from public infrastructure and public resources, and systems in New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana into privately owned entities. Public hospitals, such as Charity Hospital in New Orleans and teaching hospitals connected to Louisiana State University, were never reopened, have been shut down, or privatized. The New Orleans traditional public school system has been largely privatized and turned into a charter and voucher system. Registered Nurse Response Network
