I’ve often heard people say, “I don’t have regrets.” I’m pretty certain I’ve said that myself many times. It’s almost like there is an undercurrent in our current culture that says regret is bad and shameful. But what if regret is helpful. What if having regrets is actually the most healthy thing we could do.

But tell me, why is it that when we’re looking back and observing our life, we say we don’t have regrets? Why has having regrets become shameful, instead of normal? And can we say with 100% honesty that there isn’t a single thing we look back at and wish we acted differently or behaved differently, or feel sad about, or disappointed by? Let’s talk about that.

My wife and I often didn't have the words we needed during our darkest season of infertility. In the midst of disappointment after disappointment, a cycle of manufactured hope turning into lost hope, grief, and anger, our life together felt like a constant dark night of the soul. Well-meaning people would often attempt encouragement by saying something hopeful or optimistic. In other words, they were trying to find our silver lining. Have you ever been at the receiving end of someone just "speaking their truth?" They might have also said something like, "I just have to own my truth." It's relatively common language now, and while I believe the original intent behind "speaking our truth" is outstanding and pure, unfortunately, I think it's just become an excuse to avoid responsibility for our actions. I often want to bypass the hard emotions in favor of the good ones like peace, joy, contentment. While there are fast hacks to get me from a place of disappointment to elation, those hacks don't create lasting self-evolution or teach me how to process emotion in helpful ways. If you want to feel different emotions, you have to start by acknowledging where you are emotionally and move forward from there. Let's talk about that!

I'm processing, in real-time with you, what I've been experiencing lately.  My depression has flared up again in a big way but while it's here and happening, I'm also still participating in life in ways that matter. I've become split down the middle with 50% of me falling apart and 50% of me succeeding. It's new and different, and excruciating.

When did we become obsessed with happiness? (Or, in my case, peace?)

This question kept popping up in my head as I was working through the idea of resilience for this episode, so I paid attention and pulled it apart to see what this question was trying to communicate.

It turns out that happiness (or peace) comes when we stop obsessing over them and start obsessing over our resilience to overcome obstacles. So let's talk about that!

Have you ever the phrase, "Fake it til you make it!" It seems like such an innocent little idea until you unpack it and see how unhelpful it really is.

Everything fake is rooted in deceit and as humans that want to show up fully, authentically, and vulnerably, faking it will never accomplish that. Let's explore this idea together and what to do instead of "faking it til we make it."
