  • 122: The Future of Communication is Facebook

At the recent F8 Developer Summit, Facebook released Bot Engine, to help create smarter bots, specifically for Facebook Messenger.

The Bot Engine is developed from Wit.ai, which Facebook acquired last year. Wit.ai is the framework for Facebook Messenger.

Facebook's new strategy with Bot Engine is to get developers to embrace the framework and give Facebook Messenger users some specialized bots.

“Send receive API is more than enough,” Facebook VP of Messaging Products David Marcus said. “But if you want to build more complex bots, you can use our Bot Engine.”

The Bot Engine relies on machine learning. It means that you can feed it sample conversations so that it can handle many different variations of the same questions.

I caught up with Dennis Yu, CTO of Blitzmetrics, to get some of his inside insights on what’s going on.

Dennis is so far ahead of the curve when it comes to what is going on, I thought it would be too much to handle for some of you, but he insisted the people need to know this stuff.

    On bots economic impact:

People are fundamentally cognitively lazy-- so why have to figure out what you want and hunt it down when the AI can guess intelligently and do it for you?

Bots will be so smart that most humans in process-driven jobs will be unnecessary. The bot wars begun long ago and Facebook has the scale and strategy to win. Facebook has solved the infrastructure, programming, and even AI issues-- making it easier, ironically, for anyone to start a large-scale business.

    Minority Report is almost here.

While the masses will be out of jobs (see World Economic Forum research), the botwars will create entrepreneurship like the world has never seen before.

The financial ramification is that Facebook is the ultimate utility-- providing nearly everything "free" to use. You need only agree to connect yourself to the metaverse and if you're a business, use their advertising platform.

On what the Messenger platform means for business marketers:

Marketers and marketing tool providers face a Faustian bargain, that is, adopt the platform to have it all "solved for you" or perish.

Facebook Messenger is a platform for not just communication but all commerce, with the power of all of Facebook's federated properties behind it, all reinforcing one another.

From a marketing standpoint, Facebook is automating away the friction of having to "construct" complex funnels, allocate budget, and whatever else that isn't directly delighting customers.

From a business standpoint, Facebook has the world's most powerful marketing platform. Now all they need is GCT (goals, content, and targeting) to be able to maximize your business. They solved goals and targeting and automation content (logic) is halfway there.

The agencies that don't add tremendous creative value are dead. Facebook is killing off all the wasteful intermediaries-- ad tech, black box big data, marketing tools, "social media consultants", and parasites of all favors.

Hard to argue with experience like Dennis’.

He’s right. Today, we need to simply provide the logic and Facebook provides the ecosystem that we can “re-configure to our liking. By definition, if you can put a rule around it, it can be automated."

I’ve had many discussions with fellow marketers, clients, large and small brands and even regular folk (I often cite my brother as a reference point to the “normal” consumer), and I’ve heard everything from pure elation to conspiracy theories. With over 1.5 billion users and an incredibly robust infrastructure, one has to understand the power and implications of this.

Dennis continues, "Facebook owns the network and the social graph, therefore you must adopt their platform to communicate. They deliver internet connectivity and frictionless logins, so, you have to adopt instant articles if you’re a publisher.Owned media matters from the standpoint that we all have to produce content and produce a product, however, we are shifting where we distribute it. It's not that owned media isn't important, it's that the definition of earned media has changed."

And even more agree as to how bot technology will impact the future of customer service.

"While AI and bots are nothing new, Facebook chat bots introduce an interesting new element to the online experience at scale, making software more accessible to larger audiences” says Amir Zonozi, Chief Strategy Officer at Zoomph. "We will start to see novice users experiment with bots and introduce a new UX, and we’ll need to ask ourselves: which tasks should be handled by bots, which tasks should be handled by humans? We can’t just scale down versions of software or apps into bots like what has been attempted with smart watches (ex. TurboTax smart watch app). We need to rethink context, relevancy and personalization based on these notions. I’m excited for the emergence of bot technology and look forward to how it impacts customer service and social media."

The way we communicate is changing.

In addition to the Bot Engine, Facebook launched an entire Messenger platform.

Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp are seeing 3x more messages than standard SMS messaging. You might be asking, “who cares?” and “how does this affect my business" but I can tell you, this changes the way so much is done.

Any business, of any size, cannot ignore this shift. Facebook is leading the shift. Therefore, you cannot ignore Facebook.

Most of you are entrepreneurs and small business owners and still cannot fathom how messaging people on Facebook is good for business. Because I want you to understand exactly what is happening here, I talked to my very good friend, Ben Phillips, General Manager of Home Instead Senior Care of Fresno, California for his thoughts on what the Messenger platform and new QR codes will do for brick and mortar shops:

"I think it has less to do with competition and more to do with an overall emphasis on shifting social from an exclusively marketing tool to more of a customer service tool. I imagine the (QR) codes as a dominant presence in brick-and-mortars in the months and years to come as a way to offer 1:1 communication and an avenue to ask questions. Facebook is clearly looking to become the one-stop-shop on all things business, as well they should."

Well, Ben, Mr. Zuckerberg would agree. The Zuck is quoted at the F8 Developer Summit for saying, "We think you should be able to message a business like you message a friend."

Have we ever, in our entire history, seen this type of access to people and businesses?

Here’s the kicker. This changes how businesses will be expected to communicate with their consumers. You no longer can make excuses about the technology being too expensive. It’s free.

I’m betting big on Facebook, not just to change the way business is done, but how the world goes round.

  • 119: Hugging Your Haters with Jay Baer and Amy Schmittauer

Haters are not your problem. . . .

    Ignoring them is.

    Buy Jay's book here: http://amzn.to/1qyZ9Ib

Eighty percent of companies say they deliver outstanding customer service, but only 8 percent of their customers agree. This book will help you close that gap by reconfiguring your customer service to deliver knockout experiences.

The near-universal adoption of smartphones and social media has fundamentally altered the science of complaints. Critics (“haters”) can now express their displeasure faster and more publicly than ever. These trends have resulted in an overall increase in complaints and a belief by many businesses that they have to “pick their spots” when choosing to answer criticisms.

Bestselling author Jay Baer shows why that approach is a major mistake. Based on an extensive proprietary study of how, where, and why we complain, Hug Your Haters proves that there are two types of complainers, each with very different motivations:

·Offstage haters. These people simply want solutions to their problems. They complain via legacy channels where the likelihood of a response is highest—phone, e-mail, and company websites. Offstage haters don’t care if anyone else finds out, as long as they get answers.

·Onstage haters. These people are often disappointed by a substandard interaction via traditional channels, so they turn to indirect venues, such as social media, online review sites, and discussion boards. Onstage haters want more than solutions—they want an audience to share their righteous indignation.

Hug Your Haters shows exactly how to deal with both groups, drawing on meticulously researched case studies from businesses of all types and sizes from around the world. It includes specific playbooks and formulas as well as a fold-out poster of “the Hatrix,” which summarizes the best strategies for different situations. The book is also filled with poignant and hilarious examples of haters gone wild, and companies gone crazy, as well as inspirational stories of companies responding with speed, compassion, and humanity.

Whether you work for a mom-and-pop store or a global brand, you will have haters—and you can’t afford to ignore them. Baer’s insights and tactics will teach you how to embrace complaints, put haters to work for you, and turn bad news into good outcomes.

  • 118: Facebook Live Video Gets Major Changes

    Excerpt from Facebook Press Release:

With Facebook Live you can use your phone to share a moment instantly with the people you care about. This means your friends, family or fans can be there with you, and you can respond to their comments and see their reactions.

Since launching Facebook Live last summer to public figures via our Mentions app and more recently to everyone in the US using our iOS and Android apps we’ve been surprised and delighted with how people are using live video to connect and interact with each other all over the world. People are letting their friends discover their hobbies. Parents are using it to share moments in their kids’ lives with their extended families. Athletes are giving people a window into their training. Chefs are bringing their fans into their kitchen. Journalists are hosting global conversations on topics they care about. Aspiring musicians can now put on a live concert for their friends. Many people all over the world are using Facebook Live in many different ways to talk to and interact with the people that matter most to them.

That’s why today we’re excited to announce new features for Facebook Live to give you more ways to discover, share, and interact with live video, and more ways to personalize your live broadcasts.

    Live for Groups and Events

“Going live” on Facebook feels special because you are going live with the people you care about. Today we’re rolling out the ability to go live in Facebook Groups and Facebook Events. Live in Groups allows you to broadcast to just the people in the Facebook Group – so you can go live in your family group, or share a workout plan in a fitness group. Live in Events means you can go live from a birthday party to allow those that can’t make it to join the fun, and a performer can go live backstage to the people who’ve RSVP-ed to the event to give them a sneak peak. You can even use Events to schedule a live Q&A session. We hope this new ability to both broadcast and watch live video within Groups and Events enables people to connect more deeply with their closest friends, family and the communities of people who share their interests.

Interactive Features: Live Reactions, Replay Comments, Live Filters

Facebook Live is interactive and fun: Live reactions, replaying comments made while live and Live filters will make it even more so. Live Reactions makes it easy for your viewers to express their feelings in real time during a live broadcast. Using the same reactions we launched in News Feed, viewers can select Love, Haha, Wow, Sad or Angry, and the reactions animate right on top of the video. Live Reactions appear in real time and disappear quickly so broadcasters and other viewers can get a sense of how people are feeling at different points during the live video – it’s like hearing the crowd applaud and cheer. When your friend reacts to your video or to a video you are both watching together you’ll see their profile pic and a little starburst before their reaction appears.

Live video on Facebook is truly interactive as broadcasters engage with their commenters and respond to their suggestions and questions. In fact, from initial data, we’ve seen that people comment more than 10 times more on Facebook Live videos than on regular videos. We want people watching the broadcast after the fact to feel “in” on the action. To achieve this, we will replay comments as they happened during the live broadcast when people watch it later.

We’ve also heard that people want more creative ways to personalize their live broadcasts. Today we’re starting with a set of five Live Filters, and coming soon we’ll add the ability to draw or doodle on your video while live.

Discover more live videos: Invite Friends, Live Video Destination and Live Map

We’ve heard that people are having a lot of fun watching live with friends. That’s why today we’re also adding the option to send an invitation to a friend to watch with youright from the live video. Simply tap on the invite icon and select the friend you want to invite and they will receive a push notification with your invitation.

People don’t want to miss out on great broadcasts that are live right now. So today, we’re starting to roll out a dedicated place on Facebook’s mobile app where you can discover live video that the world is talking about, live video from the friends and creators that matter most to you, and live video on topics you’re interested in. From that place, you can also search live and non-live videos, and choose to go live yourself. Simply tap on the new video icon in the app to navigate to this new space.

Finally, if you want a visual way to explore public live broadcasts that are currently happening around the world, today we’re releasing a Facebook Live Map on desktop. People in more than 60 countries can now share live video, and we’ve been inspired by all the different global broadcasts. The Facebook Live Map gives you a window into what’s happening in the world right now.

We’re also introducing new metrics for Pages sharing live video; read more on our Media blog.

We’ve been humbled by all the amazing and creative ways that people have used Facebook Live so far, and we’re committed to creating the best experience for everyone who wants to create, watch and interact with live videos on Facebook. These features will be rolling out on iOS and Android over the coming weeks. We’ll keep working to bring you the best ways to broadcast, interact with, and discover live video. Stay tuned.

    Andiamo!
