  • #40 - Psychology in marketing: manipulation or understanding?

Interest in the link between psychology and marketing is rising. But should we be concerned about this?

Using social proof, scarcity, reciprocity, loss aversion and so on… These are all psychological tricks we’re sensitive to, no matter whether we’re aware of them or not.

But what are they being used for? To increase conversions?

Doesn’t that limit what we know about the importance and value of psychology?

It might seem like it’s new and clever to turn marketing into a form of neuroscience, but when the progress in psychology and neuroscience in terms of awareness is one of the most exciting things so far this century, it doesn’t really feel right.

I’m starting to see a lot of BS around these important topics because, like always, some greedy marketers are using the principles to influence behavior instead of doing what really matters, which is to understand people’s behavior.

What’s up with all these businesses thinking they’re going to change the way people behave?? They need to stop the ego trips and come back down to earth.

If your ambition is to deliver a good CX that helps customers while growing your business, then your first concern shouldn’t be how psychology can help you trick the people in your funnels.

Listen to the podcast and discover the 10 behavioural drivers that will transform the way you help your customer and stop the short term tricks!

Or, if you’re short on time, I’ve also condensed all the key tips – FAQ style – in a summarized, quick-read version right here.

Julien De Visscher is doing something different when it comes to customer experience. Through his company, Human37 – the first customer data strategy agency – he’s bringing people and technology together in a major way.

His overall mission? To help companies offer better UX and customer experience to end users while making data easier to understand.

"I wish the data and technology world was already demystified because we could go so much faster if people were not afraid of asking questions and looking dumb!” he told me in the podcast episode we recorded together.

Listen to the podcast and discover Julien and Human37 break silos and make data less of a hurdle – and how you can do the same thing in your customer experience role.

  • #38 - Drop the Motherfucking Struggle: How to nail your work-life balance with Susanne Grant

I found Dutch-born coach and author Susanne Grant through her book, Drop the Motherfucking Struggle, which was the perfect discovery for me at the perfect moment.

An award-winning business coach, international best-selling author and mother of two, Susanne specialises in helping entrepreneurs, team leaders and business owners redefine what success means to them so they can nail their work-life balance.

Everything she teaches clients stems from her own experiences and how they shaped her beliefs that we don't need to work as hard as society suggests we should.

“I went out into the big wide world and wasn't quite prepared,” says Susanne. “I truly believed that work had to be hard and horrible. But as I discovered over the years, this doesn't have to be the case.”

Susanne was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder when she was just 17. In her book, she writes about the impact that had and also how she used it as a stepping stone to a better life.

I invited Susanne onto the podcast to discuss nailing a work-life balance - and all the fun and misery that comes with navigating this!

Listen to discover a selection of the most intriguing thoughts she shared with me.

  • #37 - How to build the perfect career in marketing with Ilse Van Dyck

“The funny thing is, at uni I took a marketing course and literally told the guy sitting next to me, ‘If I ever work in marketing, shoot me dead,’” Ilse Van Dyck laughs.

She’s definitely changed her tune since then, having become a performance marketer before launching Boelo, a marketing job board. But that was before she understood the power of data.

“I had this very old-school image of marketing, which was that it was just fluff,” Ilse explains. “Sometimes, when I look at other departments, I think, ‘Ooh, it must be really rough not to have tangible results’.”

It’s clear that Ilse loves marketing. But she was also outspoken about the sector’s failures when I interviewed her for People&Digital, the podcast.

Here are some more of Ilse’s thoughts about marketing and how she thinks you can build the perfect career as a marketer.

  • #36 - Debunking the myths around coaching with Mélanie Boucarut

Mélanie Boucarut changed her life through coaching. It helped her to fix her relationship with her estranged mother, lose 22 kilos, save a bunch of money, find a loving partner and improve her mental health.

And all this took just 2.5 years.

That’s how long Mélanie has been a life coach for, but she’s also coached and mentored informally as part of her job or on the side for two decades. And it’s what she loves to do.

“Don't tell this to my clients, but I would pay for the privilege to coach!” Mélanie told me. “The moment when people suddenly realise what has been blocking them, limiting them and when they manage to get over it – I love to be part of that.

“It's a little bit like being a midwife, you know. I've never delivered a baby, but I imagine it's a little bit the same when you finally get the head out and the baby starts crying and you have this new life and it's beautiful.”

I specifically wanted to speak with Mélanie for my podcast about all this because I knew that we could go dig deep into the topic – without any bullshit – and discover exactly how coaching can help us step out of our own way.
