  • 3 Reasons It’s OK to Crave Chocolate
PODCAST. My girlfriend said she’d rather have chocolate than sex. Good thing her passion comes with surprising health benefits and melt-in-your-mouth flavor. Chocolate’s always been popular for its taste and mouth feel. It’s been deemed the most craved food particularly by women who feel they’ve been given permission to pamper themselves without guilt.
Personally I never met a chocolate I don’t like…well, white chocolate but then technically, it’s not the real deal.

Reasons it’s ok to crave chocolate.
Red wine and green tea are good for you because they contain compounds called flavonoids which are also found naturally in guess what…cocoa beans and chocolate. These flavonoids may have benefits that include improved blood flow, reduced blood pressure and lower lousy or LDL cholesterol.
Research is being conducted to determine whether dark chocolate could provide similar benefits to beetroot juice for elite athletics. One of the compounds in dark chocolate increases the production of nitric oxide in the body causing blood vessel dilation and reducing oxygen consumption. This may help athletes maintain their pace for a longer period of time.

  • 3 Things to Know about Turmeric
PODCAST. Turmeric…you know it as an ingredient in mustard or curry powder. You may be taking turmeric or curcumin supplements, drinking golden milk or using the spice in food, particularly Indian cooking.
Curcumin is the compound in the spice turmeric that provides that brilliant yellow-orange color. It’s a relative in the ginger family and used in East Indian medicine or Ayurveda for arthritis and various abdominal ailments.
Don’t miss the companion Food Fit Fabulous video How to Make Golden Milk.

    Three things to know.
#1. The curcumin in turmeric contains polyphenols…you may have heard of these in grapes, blueberries or green tea. It’s the polyphenol content that provides the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant benefits you hear about. When curcumin is taken orally as a supplement, only a low amount is actually absorbed by the body.
But studies are looking at ways to increase absorption and use by the body such as giving curcumin with piperine, the major active ingredient in black pepper. Isn’t that interesting how they may work as a team?
Listen to the podcast for more on turmeric.

  • Green Tea and Matcha: Is One Better for You?
PODCAST. Green tea versus matcha. Is one better for you than the other? Let’s compare the two and their health benefits. Green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant and is made by steaming freshly cut leaves. It contains a compound called EGCG, which you may have heard about in relation to weight loss. Don’t forget that caffeine is naturally occurring in green tea too, although there is less than in black tea and coffee.

You can also drink matcha tea which comes from the same plant. The difference…matcha means ‘powdered tea’ and is typically ground into a fine powder from Japanese green tea leaves with stems and veins removed. The plants are grown in shade which may increase the chlorophyll, part of the deep green color. With green tea, the leaves are discarded after infused in the water. With matcha, you drink the ground leaves. To make a cup of matcha, the powder is mixed with hot but not boiling water and whisked, typically with a bamboo tea whisk, until it froths and is well blended.
Matcha is typically more expensive than brewable green tea, a bit more time consuming to prepare and traditionally was for tea ceremonies rather than daily consumption. Not anymore. You’ll find matcha in coffee bars, coffee and tea shops, made into smoothies, desserts, etc.

  • Beyond Fat: 3 Benefits of Avocados
PODCAST. Think about avocados and what comes to mind? Guacamole? The amount of fat? You‘ve heard you shouldn’t eat them. Actually avocados are a wonderful source of the better-for-you fat known as monounsaturated. Beyond better-for-you fat, avocados have other health benefits. Let’s talk about 3 that will surprise you.

#1. Bone health: vitamin K is usually left out of the ‘how to keep bones healthy’ conversation that typically focuses on vitamin D and calcium. Essential for bone health, vitamin K can help increase the amount of the mineral calcium that is absorbed by the body. Did you know that half of an avocado provides you about 25% of the vitamin K you need every day? But don’t miss this…if you’re taking a blood thinner like warfarin, don’t start eating large amounts of avocado quickly because of the vitamin K content.
#2. Phytosterol content: phyto-what? ½ avocado contains these natural compounds called phytosterols. Why should you care? Because they may help lower LDL cholesterol, the type you don’t want elevated. What a tasty way to get this benefit. Remember we said that the better-for-you fat is called monounsaturated? It also has a positive effect on cholesterol and heart health. It’s a two for one benefit. And…an extra bonus of the monounsaturated fat content is that it helps the body use beneficial antioxidants such as beta-carotene.
