PODCAST. You’ve heard the news suggesting that when it comes to cancer, eating processed meats like bacon and deli meats ranks right up there with smoking and in the same category with alcohol and arsenic. Are you wondering just what IS safe to eat? Should you be scared to eat meat?
The cancer agency of The World Health Organization (WHO) evaluated 800 studies on meat and cancer. As a result, processed meat was said to cause colon cancer when eaten daily in the amount equivalent to a small hotdog. And, red meat is probably cancer causing, mainly for colon cancer.
How processed and red meat increased cancer risk is still unknown. It could be the charring that occurs when grilling, high temps used in processing, iron in red meat, eating too much meat instead of more healthful items or a combination of these. If you’re following a low carb or paleo diet for example, you could be over eating meat products.
But let’s look at the other side too. Red meat contributes protein, vitamins and minerals like zinc, iron and B12. Smoking or salting meat keeps us safe from potentially deadly food poisoning. Plus, there are other major risk factors for colon cancer like weight gain, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle…even your age.
It’s very confusing when the media says that red meat is in the same cancer-causing category as exposure from working in a hair salon or steroids. What do you believe? Where’s the middle ground? Three things to know.
Listen to this week’s Breaking Down Nutrition podcast to find out three things to know when it comes to meat and cancer.
