    Celebrity can come from anywhere.

I am Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Now, what am I holding up here?

I'm going to tell you about that in just a moment. But first, we're going to talk about a little thing called celebrity, and how anybody can have it. It can be developed from anywhere. And I talk about all of that in my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, you can go get a free copy at AmazonProofBook.com.

Number four, the fourth way, it's all about being somebody and you go check that out.

Now, what does being somebody mean?

I'm going to give you an example.

Now, I've been following this gentleman for many years, I among other things that I have a fascination with one of the things is, is all things that are directly related to Walt Disney, which I've brought up before, not the company, but the man himself. And one of the things that was very specific to Walt Disney was a place called Disneyland, first one in Anaheim, California.

And all the people that helped put that together because they, it wasn't one guy that put it together. It wasn't just Walt Disney that put it together.

It was a whole string of geniuses, that all got picked out and put in this place, many of them doing the things that they were doing there for the first time ever, okay, for some reason, Walt had a way of being able to pick people out of where they thought they were supposed to be, and putting them in something completely different.

So there was one gentleman in a very young age, his name was Bob Gurr. And he was put in charge of developing Abraham Lincoln, the robot that was there. A whole bunch of the early audio animatronics like for the Tiki Room, and all these other things.

If you haven't got to see these things before you got to make a trip to Disneyland once they reopen, filming this in 2020. And we're still dealing with the COVID crisis. So a lot of these things are closed down, Anaheim, disneyland is closed down. But one of the things I've done is I've followed him, but he's one of those last surviving people that helped create what Disneyland is today. And he's the same age that my my grandfather was who died earlier this year. They were both born in 31. So currently is 89.

And it's one of these things where you It's funny how you could see people of similar age, and how they went off and did different things with their life. My grandfather went join the family, ranching and farming business ended up splitting off and doing his own having his own Ranch, cattle ranch.

Over the years, Bob Gurr went and went through all these different odd jobs and ended up working for Walt Disney and doing a whole bunch of crazy wild things in Disneyland. One of the things he ended up putting together was something called the peoplemover doesn't even exist in Disneyland anymore. There's a new iteration, new word iteration over in Walt Disney World in in Orlando, Florida.

This is a signed copy of one of the posters. Now this isn't original posters, a reprint poster of the people mover that they used to have at Disneyland, which was a ride I got to I got to go on as a kid and it was just very straightforward.

How to grow your business during the holidays.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J Pombo Live and we are back at the headquarters for BrianJPombo.com.

And I love traveling, so we got to travel if you haven't been paying attention, we've been traveling down south to visit family during the holidays, and it's one of the things I love traveling, I really like to get out of the house, I love to get out of town.

But I also love coming back home, it was definitely one of those situations where we were very happy to be home. And it's great being here. It's great seeing loved ones during the holidays, but it's also great being home.

And it reminded me getting back into business mode…you can see a little bit of a glare here. Some crazy things sometimes happen when I when I don't clean the lens properly, hopefully you could deal with the ball, just see if we can do that just clean the lens there. That helps No, of course not. Of course, it doesn't help why these things happen. Whenever I'm out of my element and things don't work out quite right, I'm going to try something else, we're going to try to rub that lens with something else to help clear it up.

There we go, that helps out a little bit, little less glare going on there, you can see a little bit of reflection from the light back there. But that's I think that's more natural.

Now, this actually goes into the topic because it's really tough going in and out of the holiday season, especially if you are one of the people that are going in and out of it. If you've got a big family, if you've got a bunch of activities that happen COVID or no COVID that occurred during the season, then you're likely to get things you're likely to get, you know, just big obstacles placed in your way, when you're building your business.

    It's just a natural phenomenon.

If you if it's not happening to you, it's happening to the people you're trying to get ahold of and the people you're trying to connect with. So here's what I always recommend to people when you're trying if your job is to build connections, if you building businesses, building connections, whether new partners, new vendors, new, whatever.

What new customers, if you're looking to get out there and need to meet more people and connect with the people you already know, then the best thing you could do during the holidays is just take a deep breath and realize that everybody tends to be in a little bit of a limbo situation until after the new years, until a good week or so after the New Year's or quite oftentimes.

So what I use it for I use this time a year for is just a chance to touch base with people. Now if you have something that you celebrate you wish people happy Merry Christmas or whatever. If you if you want to be more agnostic or PC about it, you could say Happy Holidays, I still think that that's smiled upon by a lot of people and you're not going to offend anybody saying Happy Holidays, I don't think so.

Put it out there, just wish people Merry Christmas wish people happy holidays, wish people happy Hanukkah and all the rest. Just put it out there.

And just send them a message, leave them a text, leave them a Facebook message, live them or whatever, just put it out there touch base with people and remind them that you exist. And let them know, hey, we got to talk, I'm going to give you a call sometime after the New ...

  • Where Do You Stand on Customer Relations?

    Is the customer ALWAYS right?

Where do you stand on customer relations?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I've got a lot of clients and I've also had throughout the years, customers here and there have specific items. But I work with clients who work with customers and the relationship that I have with clients, oftentimes, is very similar to the relationship they're having with their customers. And it's something to really keep an eye on.

Here's the thing I always go back to, there's a time and place for everything. And while I certainly don't subscribe to the customers always being right and that you need to bend over backwards at every single chance, especially when they're when they're pushing things that they should be, there's a time and place for everything.

And so you got to be willing to step back and take a look at a situation. So I'll give you an example. I've had customers that even after or excuse me, clients, for me, it's working a lot with clients. And I've had clients that have had, that have pushed their way through the lines that I've drawn.

You always have to design lines in a relationship, what's to be expected and what's not to be expected. I've drawn the lines, expecting them to be crossed on occasion, and they almost always are. And then I remind them about the lines that are drawn.

So for example, the times of the day, the times of the week that I'm that I allow for communication, I draw those lines, and I stick to them.

Now, every once in a while there's an emergency, there's something that the client gets worked up over, they, they step over the line, and that's okay. If you get too strict about these things, then you're not keeping real clear headed, what you got to do is take everything as it comes and handle it where it happens.

Because sometimes the emergency is real, and you got to pay attention to it. Most of the time, it isn't. And I have to remind clients, okay, there's a reason why I'm available during these times are not available during these times.

But I'll work on something on Christmas Day, if necessary. If it means moving forward, even though I don't allow that for me and my clients. But if it's necessary, it's necessary you do what you got to do. And so there's a time and place for everything.

You've got to draw those lines with your customers. what's available, what isn't available, your customer service, your customer relations, how is that going to work?

How's it going to work in the long run?

What can they expect from you and your team, you got to draw these things out, stick to them as best as possible. But allow for flexibility, especially if you've got a team of people that are working on customer relations, allow for the flexibility for them to judge a time and a moment. as to when they need to.

They need to fudge the lines a little bit here and there. It makes a big difference. It gets appreciated on the other side. I can't say it gets appreciated every time. But it will be appreciated by the right people at the right time. Hopefully that's helpful.

I'm not sure it's a it's a very common thing that I come into. I come into contact with it all the time. And the people that I know that have the best relationship with their customers are ones that have a strict policy,

Don't step over gold for pennies.

Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I'm coming to you again from my car, because it's late later tonight in this is the I'm recording this the day after Christmas 2020. And because of that, we have a house full of sleeping people.

I wanted to be able to come at you with the volume, I want to come at you. And so we're here in the car.

I wanted to talk about I was reminded of a situation we were talking about a relative that used to do a lot of…a lot of hustling, a lot of selling, buying and selling items.

And we were talking about him. In fact, I remember his wife, saying that he was he was quite a hustler. And it was an interesting thing, because somebody said that he you know it, he did a whole lot of work, and would end up making you know, 50 bucks after putting out you know, 5000 bucks worth of time, money and effort into something and feel like he was a champion.

That's all fine and good and there's nothing wrong with that. But it reminds me of a lot of business owners, we get ourselves into a situation to where as Gary Halbert put it, you step over, he said something to the extent of stepping over pennies to I mean, stepping over gold, to get the pennies, you know, you're bending down and picking up pennies, but you're stepping over gold coins and bars, and you're stepping over all the silver at the same time.

And you've got to realize that there's there's value in effort, there's value in time, there's value in thought, there's value in it. And that's beyond just the physical value, the money that you put out. And you have to look at whether it's really all worth it or not.

In talking to my wife about the situation and talking about some of some clients that I've had in the past and other people, a lot of people fall in love with the idea of putting out effort and thinking that there is value in merely working hard.

Not that I don't think there you shouldn't work hard, or have a strong worth that work ethic. But that doesn't mean that you should be getting an ego high off of it. And I think way too many of us as business owners get just feel really amazing about really sweating blood and working really hard, where we don't get a huge effect off of it. And that's the difference between working smart and working hard. Yes, you should work hard.

But you shouldn't work hard at the loss of working smart, you ought to pay attention to where your efforts going. And whether it's actually producing anything.

Just because you work hard, doesn't mean you're creating enough value for the marketplace.

It doesn't mean that people truly appreciate what you're bringing, and therefore is going to reward you in the long run and reward you consistently which is hopefully what you're going after when it comes to owning a business.

Hopefully you're looking at making everything to the extent of having to be somewhat systematic after a while to where you don't have to continue putting in as much work to where people are paying for something consistently, because you're producing consistent value. I don't know. Hopefully that makes sense to you.

    Simple Merry Christmas.

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I just want to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

It is nearly midnight here Christmas Eve, in Tracy, California, and I am I've got 18% left on my phone, which is where I record all of these for you. And recording this and it'll probably go out tomorrow or the day after.

And I can tell you right now, I will not be recording anything tomorrow, just with a wife and three kids in and multiple places to go. Quite possibly I will not find the bandwidth to be able to bring you a special message tomorrow.

But we do these on a nightly basis otherwise, so if you give me Christmas, I'll be here with you the rest of the time. And if not, you can catch up on some older episodes, if you really need to really appreciate all the time you spent with me this year.

This is you know one of those times for reflection.

I know not everybody has the freedom, flexibility, a relationship with family and so forth that a lot of would allow them to just pick up, leave town, meet up with who they wanted to and do all the things that I'm able to do and I'm not trying to rub that in anyone's face. But I'm very happy for the situation I've been given I hope that you have enough of a great situation in your life that you could be thankful for where you're at regardless of all the chaos that may have happened this year in the in the years previous in recent previous past.

So have a good one, have a Merry Christmas, take some time out for yourself. Take some time out to hang out with family if you if you have any or friends that are nearby. And just have some nice time off and we'll see.

We'll see you in a couple days. You have a great night.

Are you considering all the options?

Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Coming here tonight, from the road, we're well, not technically the road, we're already at our destination and California visiting family. And it's another one of those strange situations. So we have the situation where we're in the middle of 2020, I keep saying middle of 2020, we're on the tail end of 2020, it's December of 2020.

And we have a situation where both Oregon and California have a number of regulations that limit the amount of travel you should be doing the times of night. That you should be out the amount of people you should be meeting with, even if it's family, for first Thanksgiving, and now for Christmas.

And so what I'm very openly taking my family, my wife, my three kids, traveling from Oregon to California to visit a pretty good sized family down here.

And I understand that the, that may be something that you disagree with, or something you wouldn't want to take the chance with. But it's very similar to how you're running your business.

Nowadays there are so many regulations, there are so many laws, there are so many edicts that are being put out here, there and everywhere, that you have to know what all your options are, you have to know what's all on the table.

Because eventually, and those of you who have been successful enough know this to be true, you're going to be sued, you're going to be taken to the to the court for something. And it may have been something that you intentionally did, or it may be something that you didn't mean to do, it may be an actual breaking of a rule.

Or it could just be how they're bending the language to make it look that way. There are so many things out there, you're probably doing something against the law right now, whether you know it or not, I'm probably doing something against the law just by just by the words I'm using, I don't know or perhaps against the regulations of YouTube or all the other places that we're, we're broadcasting this from.

In other words, it, you can't help it one way or the other, you're going to be doing something that someone can use against you in the long run. And you have to do your best at knowing as many of the options as possible.

The question is, do you know all the options on the table?

Do you know the risks from taking this step versus that step?

I'm just using the example of my family as one of the options, I have a business that's relatively slim, it's has the ability, I can take it on the road with me, I continue doing my media and so forth from road, I can do a lot of anything that I need to do, I can do it from a remote location. I don't have a whole lot of employees or anything of that sort.

So I don't have to worry about dragging a whole lot of people along either with the risks that I take the risks that I take, I take it on my own and I and I take that and I take them for what they're worth, I have to weigh that out before I take them. That's owning a business.

The real question is, do you have people on your team that are helping you to weigh out those risks, to look at the pros and the cons all along the way?

    The Pomodoro Technique, A Review.

Hi, I'm Brian pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I bought this little timer quite a few years ago, I don't even have batteries left in it. Let's see, I think it took a little double A or something. Yeah, little double or triple A, I think it takes a one trick light battery to run this little timer.

And this, I think I already had an iPhone at the time when I bought this. But the reason why I bought it is because someone had told me or I had read somewhere about the Pomodoro Technique. And what the Pomodoro Technique, basically in a nutshell, is, it's the idea of allowing yourself to focus for a stretch of time, specifically focus hard on something, and then take a break, and then do it again and then take a break.

And eventually, you know, doing that a number of times, so you can take a longer break. But really being able to focus long enough, I've heard 50 minutes tossed around quite a bit 4550 minutes, some people take even less sometimes it'll take 20 minutes or so. And that was the whole idea of why I bought this timer so that I can set it for 15 minutes, set it focus on what I'm doing, get it done, and move on.

Now, how well does it work?

It works great for the people that have tried it and have gotten it to work well for them. Okay, it really does.

No doubt in my mind. I just heard Jeff Walker, put out a YouTube Jeff Walker, for those of you don't know, the inventor of the product, Launch Formula, some number of other things, brilliant stuff, go watch this stuff. He's got great, great insight.

He talked about how much it had changed and helped out his creativity.

It really allowed him to get his job done. I think a lot of it comes down to coordination. I could be wrong on that. But if I were to guess, in fact that it's a good question, I'll probably I'll probably put it in my facebook group that I belong to high quickstarts.

I found that so if you're not familiar with curation, here's another thing you can go look up, go check out Kathy Colbys work over at colby.com. Specifically the Colby a index, you could take this little quiz to find out kind of where you lie on a cognitive scale.

And what co nation is it measures basically, the work side of your brain, and where you how you work best how you function best at your highest level when you're in work mode, which is a different part of the brain than everything else. You know that they don't talk about this very often.

But it's a very specific area, it was golookup combination and what Kathy Colby has come up with it's really, really, really good stuff, some of some of the best things that I have been introduced to in the last 10 years. One of them is the concept of donation.

And I think that somewhat affects how well I adjust to any type of structure. Okay, one of the things I do is I have a very difficult time sticking to structure of any sort, unless I've figured it out ahead of time, kind of set myself to it and put it into a calendar and have to have kind of built a habit out of it. If I don't do that it's difficult.

And this is one of those things, I always had a tough time picking up. This is why I found this in a sword box, I have another thing about my personality,

    Reality sucks, but….

Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I wanted to talk a little bit about reality today because, well, it's Christmas. And it's a time for reflection.

And it's tough to kind of be overtaken by the feelings of the time, when we're surrounded by a really crazy world going on right around all around us. Right? It's nuts. It's really is nuts and reality does suck to a certain extent.

But what it What's your alternative is your alternative is to either live in a fantasy world, or to not live at all right? So that those aren't, those aren't great alternatives to knowing reality and seeing it for what it is, is why it is one of the three pillars that we promote at BrianJPombo.com, which is to be reality grounded.

Reality grounded means you take it for what it is, it is what it is, and you can't do anything about what the circumstances are right in front of you. Now, you might do things to be able to do things to change it from where it's at.

But you can't do anything about where it is at it is where it is things are what they are. And you kind of have to take them for what they are, because you don't have much of another choice, really. And so that really comes down to not getting emotionally responsive, reactive to everything around you. Just don't react to it, stop reacting to everything.

You can't change it if you're reacting to it, you're being controlled by it, really, that whether it be politicians. Whether it be you know, circumstances at home, no matter what you're reacting to, you're being controlled by.

And I know a lot of times we talk about business here, but business all comes from the idea that you have some stability, that you have a direction that you want to take things that you want to bring value to the world. You can't do that, if you aren't being reality based. And you can't do that if you can't accept reality for what it is.

And you have to somewhat expect reality that there's a reality beyond what you know, you have to you just have to acknowledge that you have to acknowledge that you don't know at all, that you're going to find out more. And more than likely what you're going to find out sucks worse than what you already know. Okay, you think all the craziness that's going on right now.

Then you'll learn about some other wrinkle, you know, you learn about some other conspiracy or something that ends up being true.

It's like, Ah, you can't react to it, you just have to say, Okay, well, there's that, that that's true. Now I know that exists, and accept it for what it is. And if you do that, and you don't get wrapped up in it, because you can't change it by getting all worked up about it, you can change it, if you know what it is, know what you're dealing with, and wait for the opportunity for how we can go about fixing it, or working around it.

That's really, in my mind, that's what entrepreneurship is all about. And in once you have a handle on that learning how to slowly help other people that don't want to live in a fantasy world, allow them to be able to allow them to be able to see the same reality that you're starting to see.

Be open to being shown more reality than where you're currently at handle what you got in front of you for now.

What are the benefits of live and recorded content marketing?

    Live versus recorded content marketing.

Hi I am Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I want to talk about live versus recorded content marketing. So live content marketing is when you're doing something live when you're when you're sending it out. Without edits out for the world to see, oftentimes, there's chat associated with it, it doesn't matter whether you're doing a Facebook Live or some type of live stream on Twitch.

This has been a hot thing to do for a while, when I first started doing these talks, the reason why it's called Brian J. Pombo Live, is because we started doing them all live, live initially over Facebook, and then we take the recordings and we'd spread it out.

So there's no reason why you can't do both.

But the question is, what's what works best?

    What what's the hottest thing?

And I'm here to tell you, I don't know.

It could be it at any given moment, it could be one or the other, it could be gaining more attraction, either from directly from the market or from the platform that you're delivering it on certain platforms might be favoring it like for a while there, Facebook was favoring live content, and it still does to a certain extent, you got to do all just the right things, just to get the best favor, meaning they're going to put you in front of more people because you're alive more often.

I was doing it quite a bit often and if you aren't doing any type of paid ads with it, you tend to not end up with the bump that people who are paying are able to achieve this is a couple things that I found over time, that tends to be the case.

But there are many live platforms out there. Twitch is one that that thrives off of live video. I remember quite a few years back there was Periscope and Meerkat.

And all these other ones that were out there that got bought up by the larger companies. Because they were saying all live is the thing live is the next big thing. You got to take the big picture view on these things, though. I mean, is one ever going to really overtake the other?

    No.

I'm a big fan of old radio shows, ever since I was a kid. My grandparents first told me how when they were kids, nobody had televisions, television was very new thing.

And everyone had radios or most people had radios. And you could listen, that's how you got your entertainment, your daily entertainment, what's gotten over the radio.

So they'd have the same type of programs that you have on TV today that they had them on the radio without any pictures. So I got into old time radio, which is kind of the term that they call it OTDR old time radio I got into that years ago, when I was just a little kid. And I've always had a fascination you can see the old radio back here.

What's really interesting is most of these shows, and I mean most all through up until the 50s they were almost all a live programming. It was very rare that it wasn't like programming.

In fact, it was more often that they would take a script and have different people in different localities do the exact same script versus having a recording that they then spread about they started doing what they refer to it as transcription ba...

The main thing to remember when choosing an ideal customer.

Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I was thinking about what to talk about today and as I was kind of sifting through some of books that I have. I was reminded of a conversation I had a couple days ago with a friend and a pot and you know, somebody who really needed help with some strategy.

Both him and his wife, I had sat down with them on their family business and we're looking at it. The idea was to find out who their ideal client was, who their ideal customer was. And there's a whole bunch of different ways you can go about looking at this, but there's one main thing that you got to keep in mind.

I'll get into that in a second.

First, I want to recommend, these are two great books that I just happen to they run different parts of my shelf, but they're both screaming my name is I was I was looking around for something to talk about.

One of them is Customer Centricity. by Peter Fader, this is a really quick little read, and very well written. Very nice quick ideas in here, they kind of get to the point it's one I've gone back to over and over again, just because he words things so well.

It talks about customer centricity and how this plays into it. He says customer centricity is a strategy is a strategy to fundamentally align a customer's products and services with the wants and needs of its most valuable customers.

That strategy has a name more profits for the long term.

In most cases, if you're dealing with business, that is a main thing that you're looking into is more profits for the long term.

Now, if you step back away from that, how do you achieve those, you achieve those by finding your most valuable customers?

That is very key to finding the ideal customer is finding the most valuable ones. That's a big part of it. But this also plays back into the entire the entire direction of your company, which is why i a lot of times, early on, I started working a lot with marketing, and I'd come in as a marketing consultant.

But most of these marketing conversations came back to a bigger question, which is, where's your company going?

What's the point of it all?

What do you try to achieve?

    Because you could market anything?

But the real question is, who are you marketing too?

When, why and how is that going to affect you, as the owner of the company or as the CEO or what have you.

So here's another book. This is, The Ultimate Marketing Plan by Dan Kennedy. Really good book a little bit thicker.

This one is, it's almost like a textbook, it's one I've gone back to over and over again. Because the way he organizes his books aren't exactly like a textbook, it's not easy to find everything you need.

But once I've gone through, and I've highlighted the thing a few times, it becomes a lot more easier to find what I want. here's here's something that Well, I'll tell you a joke that he has about, about targeting, because it really is what you're looking for as a target market and your business.
