Bring Your Own Book

BYOB, the Bring Your Own Book Podcast, is back for Season 3 featuring your favourite bookworms Nikki and Kelly. Every episode we'll discuss the book we read and share our unfiltered thoughts and opinions.

In today's special episode, we’re sitting down with #1 New York Times & #1 International Bestselling author, Jennifer L. Armentrout, to discuss her latest book, A Fire in the Flesh!

On sale as of October 31st, 2023, this highly anticipated release from Blue Box Press is the third in the Flesh and Fire series, which also happens to be a prequel and companion series to one of our favourite books at BYOB, From Blood and Ash.

The only thing that can save the realms now is the one thing more powerful than the Fates. After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.

Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though–not even with a lifetime of training. While his most favored Revenant is insistent that she is nothing more than a lie, Kolis’s erratic nature and twisted sense of honor leave her shaken to the core, and nothing could’ve prepared her for the cruelty of his Court or the shocking truths revealed. The revelations not only upend what she has understood about her duty and the very creation of the realms but also draw into question exactly what the true threat is. However, surviving Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time.

But Nyktos will do anything to keep Sera alive and give her the life she deserves. He’ll even risk the utter destruction of the realms, and that’s exactly what will happen if he doesn’t Ascend as the Primal of Life. Yet despite his desperate determination, their destinies may be out of their hands.

But there is that foreseen unexpected thread—the unpredictable, unknown, and unwritten.

We'll be talking about her writing process, what it's like to release *three* books in one year, and everything From Blood and Ash and A Fire in the Flesh. We even have some spoiler-y questions for those who have read the book so, if you don't want to be spoiled, or haven't finished reading A Fire in the Flesh yet, please refer to the chapters in this podcast episode!

Happy Halloween! This episode, Nikki and Kelly are joined by their partners, Scott and Bryce, to read The Spite House by Johnny Compton. This debut novel puts a new spin on the haunted house trope with themes of ancestral trauma, grief, and retribution.
---
Eric Ross is on the run from a mysterious past with his two daughters in tow. Having left his wife, his house, his whole life behind in Maryland, he’s desperate for money–it’s not easy to find safe work when you can’t provide references, you can’t stay in one place for long, and you’re paranoid that your past is creeping back up on you.

When he comes across the strange ad for the Masson House in Degener, Texas, Eric thinks they may have finally caught a lucky break. The Masson property, notorious for being one of the most haunted places in Texas, needs a caretaker of sorts. The owner is looking for proof of paranormal activity. All they need to do is stay in the house and keep a detailed record of everything that happens there. Provided the house’s horrors don’t drive them all mad, like the caretakers before them.

"Don't be afraid," I murmured. "We belong together."
I was abruptly overwhelmed by the truth of my own words.
This moment was so perfect, so right, there was no way to doubt it.
His arms wrapped around me,
holding me against him....
It felt like every nerve ending in my body was a live wire.
"Forever," he agreed.

Nikki and Kelly wrap up their Twilight saga re-read with the final book in the original series, Breaking Dawn. The series that made readers question whether vampires or werewolves could ever live in harmony is coming to a close, but not before it unleashes a few more surprises, including the most horrifying of all... Renesmee.

As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?
---

In this episode, while Nikki and Kelly still decide whether to pledge their allegiance to Edward or Jacob, they also ask all the hard-hitting questions such as what happens when Bella gets her period? Would Jacob and Bella have worked out if the Cullens had never moved to Forks? And just how exactly do vampire penises work?!

I knew we were both in mortal danger. Still, in that instant, I felt well. Whole. I could feel my heart racing in my chest, the blood pulsing hot and fast through my veins again. My lungs filled deep with the sweet scent that came off his skin. It was like there had never been any hole in my chest. I was perfect - not healed, but as if there had never been a wound in the first place.
---

In this episode, Nikki and Kelly start to question their entire lives as they begin to wonder whose side they're really on... Are they still Team Edward, or are they now Team Jacob?! Or is it still too early to make that choice? After all, this is only book two out of four- there are plenty of twists left to unravel, and we're only just getting started!

About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him—and I didn't know how dominant that part might be—that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

The BYOB ladies are back with another series. In this four-part series, Nikki and Kelly deep dive into the original Twilight saga!

When Stephenie Meyer's Twilight was introduced to the world back in 2005, it was a game changer for supernatural romance and YA fantasy. Having inspired countless books since its first publication, this series took over the world and, later on, movie theatres.

This series tends to get a bad wrap, but is it warranted? Join Nikki and Kelly as they revisit a childhood favourite, spend some time with Bella and the Cullens in Forks, Washington, and discuss one of today's most pressing matters: Team Edward, or Team Jacob?

This episode, the BYOB ladies are once again joined by Tilly to discuss #1 New York Times bestselling author R.F. Kuang's Babel: An Arcane History. Having already read and loved The Poppy War back in season 1, the ladies knew they needed to meet up again to chat about one of her latest works.

Traduttore, traditore: An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. The tower and its students are the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver-working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as the arcane craft serves the Empire's quest for colonization.

As his studies progress, Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide . . .

Can powerful institutions be changed from within, or does revolution always require violence?
