    Guest: Christiaan Smith
Celebrated baritone Christiaan Smith will make his Carnegie Hall debut this fall with “Songs We Know,” presented by Trespass Productions, Saturday, November 18th at 8PM in Weill Recital Hall. Tickets, priced at $48 to $78, are available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office, 154 West 57th Street, or can be charged to major credit cards by calling CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800 or by visiting the Carnegie Hall website, www.CarnegieHall.org.
In “Songs We Know,” Smith explores the popular songs of The Beatles, Adele, John Legend, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Simon and Garfunkel, Elvis, and more. Each song is given a fresh interpretation that will make you question the definition of the “art song.” In this program, “Some Enchanted Evening” intertwines with “My Way” to a Schubert-inspired piano accompaniment. With Dr. Casey Robards at the piano, pop iconography merges with musicology in this fresh perspective on American top-40 radio hits from various decades.
“I could not be more excited to make my Carnegie hall debut with this playlist of a program,” says Smith. “I’ve always wanted to bridge the gap between contemporary ‘popular hits’ and the ‘art song’ recitals I did in opera school, so I’ve hand-selected and rearranged some of my favorite pop gems. I want to show listeners that a song does not have to be classical to be a classic.”

  • #BroadwayAMA Episode 1: Matthew James Thomas of ‘Time and the Conways’
In this first episode of BroadwayRadio’s “#BroadwayAMA,” host Kaitlin Milligan talks with Broadway’s former Peter Parker and Pippin, Matthew James Thomas. The Buckinghamshire-born actor is currently starring in the first-ever Broadway revival of J.B. Priestley’s “Time and the Conways.” The Roundabout Theatre Company revival is currently playing at the American Airlines Theatre through November 26th.
Via BroadwayRadio’s Twitter and Facebook feeds, Matthew’s fans have submitted questions, and Kaitlin gets the answers, as well asking some questions of her own.
In 1919 Britain, Mrs. Conway (Elizabeth McGovern of “Downton Abbey”) is full of optimism during her daughter’s lavish twenty-first birthday celebration. The Great War is over, wealth is in the air, and the family’s dreams bubble over like champagne. Nineteen years later, though, the Conways’ lives have transformed unimaginably.
This time-jumping play by J.B. Priestley (An Inspector Calls) takes place at the crossroads of today and tomorrow—challenging our notions of choice, chance and destiny. Tony winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent) directs.
MATTHEW JAMES THOMAS (Robin) is thrilled to join the cast of Time and the Conways. Matthew is best-known in the U.S. for originating the title role in the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Pippin, directed by Diane Paulus, for which he received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Earlier this year he was cast as a series regular in a new NBC SONY pilot “Shelter” as Dr. Sam Carnahan, directed by Charles McDougall and written by Warren Leight. The year prior he was cast as series regular Henry Paine in the HBO drama pilot “The Devil You Know” written by Jenji Kohan and directed by Gus Van Sant. He had moved from the U.K. to the U.S. in 2010 to play Peter Parker in the original cast of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark on Broadway directed by Julie Taymor with music by Bono and Edge. After the success of Pippin, Matthew went on to shoot a recurring lead in NBC-Universal’s “Believe” with executive producers JJ Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón. He then joined the cast of the musical adaption of Barry Levinson’s classic film Diner with original music by Sheryl Crow playing the role of Fenwick for the Signature Theatre and was nominated for a Helen Hayes award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical. In his earlier career, Matthew appeared in the hit British, BAFTA award-winning film Billy Elliott and hit film About a Boy starring Hugh Grant. He later starred as Prince John in the Emmy award-winning The Lost Prince for the BBC directed by Stephen Poliakoff. Television series regular credits include: Jez in “Britannia High” for ITV. Joe in “Wonderful You” for ITV. Matthew Davey in “The Blind Date” for ITV. Guest leads credits include: “Midsomer Murders,” “Casualty,” “Doctors,” “Genie in the House,” “The Bill,” “Hero to Zero” and “Trevor’s World of Sport.”

  • Stagecraft: Anna Ziegler, author of “The Last Match”
The Stagecraft podcast is hosted by Jan Simpson. It is a series of interviews with playwrights (and musical book writers) of shows opening on Broadway and off-Broadway.
    Guest: Anna Ziegler
ANNA ZIEGLER (Playwright). Anna’s play Photograph 51, produced on the West End starring Nicole Kidman and directed by Michael Grandage, won London’s 2016 WhatsOnStage award for Best New Play. It has been produced around the country and the world, most recently in Hamburg, Rome, and Stockholm. Her play The Last Match premiered at The Old Globe Theatre and was nominated for the 2016 San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Outstanding New Play award. Another new play, Actually, will be produced this year at The Geffen Playhouse, The Williamstown Theatre Festival and The Manhattan Theatre Club. Boy, which premiered off-Broadway in a Keen Company/Ensemble Studio Theatre co-production, was nominated for the 2016 Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award and will be produced at TimeLine Theatre in Chicago next season. The Wanderers, commissioned by The Old Globe Theatre, will premiere there in 2018. A Delicate Ship was produced at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and The Playwrights Realm and was a New York Times and Time Out Critic’s Pick. Anna holds commissions from Second Stage Theatre, The Geffen Playhouse and Seattle Rep. She is developing a television series for HBO based on her play Actually, another for AMC/Sundance, and is at work on a screenplay for Scott Free Productions. Oberon Books has published a collection of her work entitled Anna Ziegler: Plays One. Other of her plays are published by Dramatists Play Service. She holds a BA from Yale and an MFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
