Weekly Highlights:
- US weekly ethanol production came down 39 thousand barrels per day last week (roughly 11.5 million gallons on the week) falling to 289 million gallons- the lowest level since back in April.
- Export sales week over week were down for corn at 3.9 million bushels and wheat at 7.6 million bushels but up for soybeans at 3.6 million bushels and grain sorghum at 500 thousand bushels. Corn and beans both had impressive new crop sales of 29.5 million bushels for corn and 47.9 million bushels for beans.
- Open interest futures and options contracts for corn and Chicago wheat were flat on the week while soybeans saw almost a 1% gain in open interest positions. Managed money traders build 11,778 positions of corn while selling off 5,216 positions of Chicago wheat and 2,173 positions of soybeans.
- Last week’s cattle on feed report showed 11.2 million head on feed- the second highest August total on record. Cattle placements for July were 1.8% higher year over year compared to industry expectations of a 1.5% decline.
- Weekly grain export inspections were better last week. Corn inspections of 29.2 million bushels were up 8 million from the previous week and wheat inspections of 21.8 million bushels were up 7.5 million bushels. Soybean inspections were down week over week but still exceeded their 4-week rolling average.
- Cold weather is delaying planting of first crop corn in Rio Grande Do Sul but the real threat is a third consecutive year of La Nina in that region.
- National corn conditions rating fell 2% on the good to excellent condition rating to 55% last week compared to a historical average of 62%. Four percent of the crop was rated as mature.
- National soybean good to excellent ratings fell 1% again this week to 57% compared to the three-year average of 61%.
- The 30th annual Pro Farmer Crop Tour is happening this week with Monday’s results coming in for South Dakota, part of Nebraska and Ohio.
