Reporter Mark Dorenkamp talks with Chris Nicholas, president and CEO of Låkril Technologies, about his company's efforts to produce a biobased acrylic acid. Acrylic acid is a polymer used in the production of paints, diapers, coatings, adhesives and other products. Currently, acrylic acid is derived from petroleum. Research has shown that deriving acrylic acid from a renewable feedstock, like corn, could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 35%. Minnesota's corn organizations are funding Låkril as part of their mission to foster new uses for for corn, support innovation and promote sustainability.

Golden Harvest Corn Product Manager Andy Ackley says an example of learning through experience is data resulting in greater stalk strength. “It’s critical to overall hybrid performance,” Ackley told Brownfield Ag News, “and impacts harvestability and yield potential.” Following 2018’s experience with lodging issues in many brands and varieties, Ackley says the company stepped up its analysis of stalk strength data with an instrument called the Stalk Crusher. Thanks to data provided by the Stalk Crusher, Ackley says it’s expected that all hybrids will be vetted for stalk strength within the next couple of years.
