· This week in the markets – Cash cattle $.25 higher this week. Feeder cattle markets were steady to $2 higher. August live cattle futures were down $.60. August feeder cattle were down nearly $1.20. Choice box beef was up nearly $9. Cash barrow and gilt prices were up nearly $.50. July lean hog futures closed nearly $1.20 higher. Pork cutout value gained $6.75.
· Weekly Slaughter Numbers – At the end of the week, cattle slaughter was 538,000 head, down 91,000 from last week and up 90,000 on the year. Hog slaughter was 1.975 million head, which’s down 403,000 on the week and down 478,000 on the year. Year-to-date cattle slaughter is up 5.8 percent and hog slaughter is 1.8 percent higher.
· Job Reports – 559,000 jobs in May and an Unemployment Rate fell to 5.8%. Notable job gains in leisure and hospitality.
