·This week in the markets – Cash cattle are fell $2.25 this week while feeder cattle markets are steady to $4 higher. October live cattle futures are up $1.00 for the week and October feeder cattle gained $2.00 on the week. The Choice/Box beef price lost $5.20 this week, led by the weakness in loins. The Choice box beef price remains right at year-ago levels. Cash barrow and gilts are nearly $4.00 higher this week. The October lean hog futures contract closed $6.50 higher this week on ASF concerns in Germany. The pork cutout value was up $4.50 this week, led by higher ham and belly prices.
·Slaughter – Cattle slaughter for the week is estimated at 574,000 head, that’s 9.3% lower than the previous week but is affected by the Labor Day holiday. Hog slaughter is estimated at 2.335 million head, that’s 5.7% below a week ago. Year to date hog slaughter is 1.3% above year ago levels despite the lower slaughter levels that occurred when processing plants where shuttered or slowed during the COVID-19 outbreaks in processing plants.
·Monthly Exports – Red meat net exports rebounded in July by nearly 50 million pounds. Pork exports year to date are 24% above 2019 levels while beef exports are 7.7% below years ago levels. July beef exports were up 36% from June. US pork exports to China grew 48 million pounds relative to year ago levels.
·Retail prices – Meat prices declined again in August but still remain above year ago levels. The choice beef price average $6.49 a pound in August, down $0.35 from July The pork retail price averaged $4.08 per pound in August, down $0.10 from July.
