Propane supplier Luke Fitzpatrick is hard-pressed to list all the ways the fuel is used in agriculture.

“Irrigation, grain drying of course, building heat, generators to keep buildings warm whenever we have bad weather,” said Fitzpatrick, past chairman of the Missouri Propane Education and Research Council, recalling more of the ways propane is used on the farm, “water heaters, also weed control, forklifts, vehicles and lawnmowers.”

Fitzpatrick, who is with MFA Oil, says advantages of using propane begin with saving money.

Challenging weather conditions limited the application of fall fertilizer, and WinField United agronomist Jon Zuk says farmers are asking about how that will impact the upcoming growing season.

• This week in the markets – Live cash fed cattle were down $1.40 this week. Feeder cattle markets were steady to $5 higher for the week. April live cattle closed down $1.45 this week and April feeder cattle futures closed down $2.30 for the week. The Choice Box Beef price gained $0.60 this week. Cash hogs closed up $0.60 on the week. The April lean hogs closed up strongly with a gain of over $4.00 for the week. The pork cutout value was $1.35 higher for the week, as weakness in hams was offset by the remaining primals.
• US and Canada Cattle and Hogs – The combined US and Canada livestock numbers were released this week showing similarities between the two countries. The US inventory numbers were from previously released USDA reports. Canada cow inventory was 2% lower and at levels not seen for many years. Canada sow inventory was slightly lower relative to a year ago.
• Jobs Report – A strong jobs report for February showed that 273,000 jobs were added. The unemployment rate fell to 3.5%. The jobs report survey was conducted before the current COVID-19 outbreak had unfolded.

Brent Heid ships thousands of young weanling pigs every week. His challenge is to keep them comfortable.

“We use liquid propane heat in almost every room and in almost every hallway,” Heid told Brownfield Ag News.

Heid, whose western Missouri farrow to wean operation is known as Lone Tree Farms, manages propane levels with the help of supplier installed and monitored gauges on his fourteen propane tanks. Before the tank monitors were installed, Heid says during particularly frigid periods, they occasionally had to scramble to prevent young pigs from getting cold.
